Koudai Gouwu raises US$350M in Tencent-led Series C funding

The Chinese e-commerce company will use this massive investment to expand its user base Image credit: koudai.com Chinese e-commerce company Koudai Gouwu  – or Pocket Shopping in English — quietly revealed in a posting to its Weibo account yesterday that it had raised US$350 million in series C funding led by Tencent, one of Alibaba’s biggest competitors in the online retail space. Kuodai had originally raised an undisclosed amount in a 2010 seed round from Xiaomi Founder Lei Jun, followed by US$12 million in Series A investment from Jingwei Investments in 2011. Warburg Pincus invested an undisclosed amount in Series B round in 2012, with Matrix Partners China also investing the same year a speculated US$6 million. CrunchBase has more background on the company: Koudai Gouwu is a mobile-focussed shopping marketplace, headquartered in Beijing, that lets merchants sell direct to buyers and integrates with WeChat. Founded in 2011, Koudai sees 83 million unique visitors per month, primarily on mobile. It will use the recent funding to expand its user base, looking to capitalise on WeChat’s 438 million monthly active users. Koudai’s Founder and CEO is Ke Wang, and its Director is Julian Cheng.
