Kokam's Lithium-ion NMC battery technology cost-effectively provides high-power output to replace the network's spinning reserve diesel generators Seoul, South Korea /PRNewswire/ - Kokam Co., Ltd, a global provider of innovative lithium-ion battery solutions and a subsidiary of SolarEdge Technologies, has entered into contract to supply Electricité de Tahiti (EDT), a subsidiary of ENGIE, with a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) serving as Tahiti's first 'Virtual Synchronous Generator (VSG)'. Comprised of a 15MW / 10.4MWh battery system with an integrated 20Mvar STATCOM, the state-of-the-art BESS will replace EDT's spinning reserve diesel generators in order to cost-effectively reduce diesel fuel consumption, allow more renewable energy and strengthen the grid. By incorporating more renewable generation sources and improving the performance of its diesel genset, EDT may reduce fuel costs of approximately up to ~€1.25M per annum. The VSG is also expected to increase savings in the form of reduced generator maintenance costs and the extension of generator operational lifespan. The EDrive system replaces the existing Prius NiMH battery and Toyota battery control computer with a larger advanced lithium-ion battery and a battery monitoring and control system. The new system aims to allow the Prius to be charged at home using a standard 110/120V home outlet. With the larger battery, the Prius runs in electric only 'EV' mode at lower speeds or when less power is needed. The result is EV driving and electrically boosted gasoline driving for a 40 or so miles with a gasoline efficiency of over 100mpg. After the 40 mile 'boosted' range, the vehicle performs just like a standard Prius until it is plugged in again. The battery system is about 2" higher and 3" longer than the Toyota NiMH battery. It is installed under the rear cargo carpet without limiting access to the spare tire. A small display is mounted on the dashboard.
