The University of Southern Indiana (USI) has rolled robots to deliver food to students across its campus. The delivery robots will operate during campus dining hours and deliver from on-campus restaurants, beginning with a fleet of 15 robots. Orders can be made via the Grubhub app, with the service being offered in partnership with USI’s food service provider, Sodexo. Kiwibot, a developer of autonomous last-mile delivery robots, has provided the technology. “The introduction of Kiwibot robots will revolutionise convenience for our busy students and employees.” Food deliveries are expected to take just minutes, according to university officials, with users able to track the progress of the order using an interactive map. The autonomous robots use sensors to detect their surroundings, with orders being unlocked through an app once the food arrives. “Having Kiwibot robots on campus gives our students a chance to see and interact with innovation beyond the classroom,” said Steve Bridges, VP for finance and administration, USI. “The robots are a direct reflection of our modern campus which continues to evolve.” Kiwibot is a finalist for the first-ever Robotics & Automation Awards in the Best Use of Robotics or Automation in Food and Beverage category.
