media_camera A packed public meeting at Keith in support of the local hospital has failed to pressure Health and Wellbeing Minister Stephen Wade into injecting more cash into the facility. More than 250 people filled the Keith Institute on Monday night for a briefing and were told the private hospital would continue to operate as normal for three weeks. This followed threats to shut the service from this week unless the Government provided extra funding on top of its $1 million a year and an emergency top up of $400,000, partly due to the cost of using locum GPs in the 24/7 emergency department. The hospital board will meet with Mr Wade this week but on Tuesday he indicated there would be no extra funding. “I made it very clear in my communication with Keith Hospital at the end of last year that the $400,000 emergency funding would be the last payment for the rest of this financial year,” he said. Mr Wade said he had considered bringing the hospital into the public system but stressed he had not been asked to by the hospital board.
