New mid-cycle bell pepper for cultivation in Almeria launched

Nov 10, 2021

On November 3, Sakata Seed Ibérica held an open day at a facility in Balanegra, Almeria, where it presented Juma, the seed company's new addition to the bell pepper program that is being developed for Almeria. Sibac, the early red bell pepper that has been a success in its first year after launch, was Sakata's previous launch and is now followed by this mid-cycle pepper. Juma stands out for its high quality fruit. Its color and shape are maintained throughout the cycle and it has the highest resistance to powdery mildew in the market. "Our main objective was to create a quality, resistant bell pepper that makes the work of the growers easier," said Javier Perez, product promoter for solanaceae at Sakata Seed Ibérica. More than 200 people attended the event, including growers, cooperative and supply warehouse technicians, and the media. The event took place at two farms, one devoted to the Sibac and the other to the Juma, making it possible to observe both crops, share points of view, and be advised by the Sakata team. Matias Garcia, sales manager of Sakata Almeria, highlighted the good reception of this new bell pepper among attendees and emphasized Sakata's clear commitment to this segment. "It is a segment that is growing a lot. There is demand for resistant, high quality products, and that is precisely what makes the Juma and Sibac so interesting." With the slogan "I am part of you", Sakata aims to make it clear that its varieties are designed for Almería, and that behind each one there is a human team making it possible. That is why, just as it was done with the Sibac, the name JUMA comes from Juan María, as a tribute to the technician who worked in the development of the bell pepper. Sakata Seed Ibérica, which celebrates its 25th anniversary this year, is firmly committed to the province of Almería. The company's objective is to develop varieties that adapt to the needs of the producers with its range of peppers, tomatoes, cucumbers, or zucchini, among others. Its Production and Research Station, located in Vícar, is striving to add value to Almeria's agricultural sector. For more information:
