Johnson Controls names 2 execs to lead China venture

May 22, 2014

By Thomas Content of the Journal Sentinel May 22, 2014 11:14 a.m. (1) Comments Johnson Controls Inc . will relocate two of its 14 corporate officers to Shanghai to help lead the company's expanding efforts in the world's largest and rapidly growing country. "Having company leaders located in the region is a key enabler, as we significantly expand investments across all business units within the region and strengthen our automotive relationships in response to the continued rapid growth of China as the largest automotive market in the world," said Alex Molinaroli, chairman and chief executive, in a prepared statement. The Glendale-based company is Wisconsin's largest company based on sales, with $43 billion in revenue last year. The company said Thursday that Beda Bolzenius , who runs the company's car seating business, will lead corporate activities in the region from Shanghai as vice chairman, Johnson Controls Asia Pacific. Bolzenius has led the car seating and interiors business since 2005 and has been based in the United States since 2007, when he relocated from Germany. Bolzenius will be the company's lead executive, or executive sponsor, for the China-based auto parts joint venture that Johnson Controls announced Sunday in Shanghai. Johnson Controls will have a 30% stake in the new company, a combination of its own interiors parts business and that of a subsidiary of China's largest car company, Shanghai Automotive Industries Corp. The company also said Susan Davis , chief human resources officer, will also relocate to Shanghai. Davis has been executive vice president of human resources since 2005. The moves underscore the emphasis the company is placing on establishing itself for more growth in China at a time when the European and North American economies are seeing much more restrained, if any, expansion. Johnson Controls broke ground last year in Shanghai on what it's referred to as "corporate headquarters East. " In her expanded role, Davis will lead the development of the second corporate office and establish "unifying human resource organization, practices and process for the region," the company said. The announcements may not be the last as the company positions itself for more growth in China, which accounted for more than $6 billion in sales last year and where the company already has 26,000 of its 170,000 employees. Molinaroli told investors on a conference call Monday, "You'll see more news coming from us in the next couple months, about how we're going to move our center of gravity, particularly in automotive, to China — to make sure that we're supporting our customers but also to take advantage of the lower cost tooling, lower cost engineering and lower cost innovation that's coming out of there. "
