The co-founder/director of Adelaide-based circus and physical theatre company, Gravity & Other Myths, shows us a few of her home favourites. NAME Jascha Boyce WORKLIFE Co-founder, company director and ensemble performer in Adelaide-based circus and physical theatre company, Gravity & Other Myths (GOM), set to premiere their fourth work, Out Of Chaos, in the 2019 Adelaide Festival. CAREER HIGHLIGHTS/BEST KNOWN FOR … Creating a hugely (and surprisingly) successful circus company with my closest friends, from our humble beginnings in the Adelaide Fringe, to premiering two works in Adelaide Festival and touring three ensembles, full-time, worldwide. At home with Jascha Boyce, of Gravity and Other Myths. Picture: Nick Clayton. I’VE LIVED IN MY HOME FOR … Two months. I am a touring acrobat after all. My husband and I bought it while we were on tour, we didn’t even get to see the house until the day we moved in. MY HOME IS … A converted church, currently surrounded by concrete! We love that it is a blank canvas and we cannot wait to create our own little oasis here — think Palm Springs meets Mediterranean island escape. I LIVE WITH … My husband, Joren. I stole him away from his home in San Francisco to tour with GOM (he is also an acrobat). I LOVE MY HOME BECAUSE … This is the first time I have had my own space that isn’t a hotel room somewhere in the world. It has history but also so much opportunity for us to make it our own. At home with Jascha Boyce, of Gravity and Other Myths. Picture: Nick Clayton. BUT I STILL NEED TO … Do so many things. It is never-ending. Our upcoming projects focus around the backyard, we love to garden. We are planning to cut a circular lawn in the concrete, build a shed and, last but not least, insert a plunge pool made from a concrete water tank! My dad is an architect so we already have endless ideas brewing for future extensions. MY DECORATING STYLE IS … Influenced by my many years of travel. I am an avid collector, so you can find treasures from my travels all over our home. I like to think of my style as a healthy combination of vintage and modern. I love functional, simple spaces but you can’t keep me away from beautiful crockery, art and glassware RECENT PURCHASE Our 1970s Martin Visser lounge set. I am in love. (Soda Objects is my new favourite treasure trove in Adelaide.) At home with Jascha Boyce, of Gravity and Other Myths. Picture: Nick Clayton. I COLLECT … FAVOURITE PART OF YOUR HOME Our entire house is essentially one room and it just so happens to be the best room in the house. We still have the original floorboards from when it was built as a church in the 50s. And I adore our kitchen — especially our new stove! We both love to cook and spend so much time in the kitchen. HOME FAVOURITES ●My grandma was an artist so all the art we have hanging in our home is hers. It is so special to be able to decorate my walls with memories of her. ● My Tokyo bike, Priscilla — my pride and joy. ● My handmade vase from Rome. It is a sculpture of an African woman and she somehow survived in my suitcase for months. ● Our set of Cisco & The Sun mugs. We brought them back from our honeymoon trip to Bali. At home with Jascha Boyce, of Gravity and Other Myths. Picture: Nick Clayton. IN MY GARDEN I HAVE … A lot of concrete right now. Before we moved in the backyard was used as a carpark. We have already started breaking up the concrete to plant trees and we have so many potted plants, inside and out. We even have two baby fig trees which are covered with fruit. WHEN I GET HOME AT NIGHT … The first thing I do is cook dinner. We spend so much time on the road staying in hotel rooms, so having a kitchen is such a luxury. AT WEEKENDS I LIKE TO … As a professional performer I often work on the weekends but when I have the occasional weekend off I spend time with my family and my two dachshunds, Lilu and Dexter. My husband and I also have some good friends who are winemakers in the Adelaide Hills so we love to spend afternoons up in Basket Range or at The Summertown Aristologist wining and dining. At home with Jascha Boyce, of Gravity and Other Myths. Picture: Nick Clayton. MY FIRST CAR WAS … I LIKE TO LISTEN TO … Hozier, The XX, James Blake, Laurel … the list could go on forever. We just recently bought some 1970s speakers made in LA so anything on them sounds pretty wonderful. AT THE MOMENT I AM READING … The Water Cure, by Sophie Mackintosh. FAVOURITE FILM At home with Jascha Boyce, of Gravity and Other Myths. Picture: Nick Clayton. CLEAN FREAK OR MESSY BESSIE? Somewhere in between. A vegie patch, a plunge pool and a concrete bathtub. WHEN I’M HOME I LIKE TO COOK … Homemade pasta. My family is Italian so I absolutely love to make spaghetti. FAV FAVOURITE DRINK? Natty wine! I have always been very interested in organic foods and a healthy lifestyle so as soon as I discovered low intervention wines I haven’t looked back. If you haven’t tried them yet, do it. At home with Jascha Boyce, of Gravity and Other Myths. Picture: Nick Clayton. FAVOURITE SA HOLIDAY SPOT OR ACTIVITY Staycations! I spend so much time travelling that when I am home I don’t want to leave. WHEN I WAS A CHILD I WANTED TO BE … Dorothy the Dinosaur from The Wiggles. FAVOURITE CHILDHOOD MEMORY IF I COULD CHANGE CAREER NOW I WOULD … DREAM HOLIDAY DESTINATION I haven’t made it to yet. MORE NEWS FAVOURITE SPORTS TEAM I actually don’t follow sports at all. If I had to choose one it would be the San Francisco 49ers. MY NEIGHBOURS ARE … New. I haven’t had much of a chance to connect to them yet. It is early days though. I COULDN’T LIVE WITHOUT … My phone – it is the only way I can stay connected to my family while I am on the road. Having the technology that can make me feel like I am in the room with them even when I am on the other side of the world is a lifesaver. I don’t think I could do what I do without it. IF I COULD AFFORD IT I WOULD LIVE … I would have houses all over the world so I could make little homes wherever I was. One in Australia, one in San Francisco, one in Italy, one in Madrid, one in Bali, one on a Greek Island … At home with Jascha Boyce, of Gravity and Other Myths. Picture: Nick Clayton. SOMETHING YOU WANT TO ACHIEVE IN THE NEXT 10 YEARS? Over the next 10 years I am going to build a home here in Adelaide while finding the balance of touring the world and having some stability. The ongoing challenge every touring performer faces. HOME MEANS … Comfort, stability and family. Gravity & Other Myths performs Out of Chaos at the Adelaide Festival, at Scott Theatre, Uni of Adelaide, tonight. Tickets adelaidefestival.com.au
