IQM All the daily Finnish business news that works: IQM, Finnish films, Hei Schools, Admescope, Jartek and University of Helsinki make headlines. Finnish film trio take home awards in Europe, Hei Schools expands to Thailand, Admescope is acquired, Jartek wins a big order in France, IQM raises series-A funding, and the University of Helsinki innovates with imaging. Finnish films won five awards over the weekend at Nordische Filmtage Lübeck and the Raindance Film Festival. Jenni Toivoniemi’s Games People Play was named The Best Feature Debut and awarded the Baltic Film Prize for a Nordic Film in Lübeck. Ville Jankeri’s Forest Giant won the Audience Prize at the festival in Germany. Over at Raindance, the UK’s largest indie film festival, Force of Habit, an anthology film composed of six short films by Kirsikka Saari, Elli Toivoniemi, Anna Paavilainen, Alli Haapasalo, Reetta Aalto, Jenni Toivoniemi and Miia Tervo, was awarded for both Best Screenplay and Best International Feature. SES Finnish education company Helsinki International School Group will open its first early-childhood learning centre in Bangkok in 2021. It will be one of two Hei Schools opening in Thailand in a collaboration with local partner Children Must Play. The first is set to open in September and welcome up to 200 children aged between one and six. The plan is to open the second in the coming years and expand to classes for primary school pupils. Hei Schools Admescope, a contract research organisation hailing from Oulu, Finland, has been acquired by MercachemSyncom, the leading mid-sized European drug-discovery contract research organisation. The Finnish company brings with it world-class expertise in drug metabolism, drug interactions, pharmacokinetics and quantitative bioanalysis. It currently employs 40 scientist in Oulu and Södertälje, Sweden, serving pharma and biotech clients all around the world. Pexels Finnish sawmill technology supplier Jartek will deliver a sorting line for green lumber to Fargesbois, part of Piveteau Group, a major French wood processor. The delivery also consists of technology for the existing process, such as multiple servo feeders and machine vision systems. Jartek won a smaller contract earlier this year in France and has worked there for years with its local partner Finnsobois, but the latest order is a major breakthrough in the market. Jartek IQM Quantum Computers (IQM), a European leader in building superconducting quantum computers, has raised 39 million euros in series-A funding, bringing its total financial backing to 71 million euros. The round was led by MIG Fonds, with participation from all existing investors, and attracted new investors including Vsquared, Salvia, Santo Venture Capital and Tencent. The funding will be used to accelerate IQM’s hardware development and to co-design application-specific quantum computers for industrial customers. It will also help IQM to attract and retain top global quantum computing talent and to establish sales and business development teams. IQM Researchers at the University of Helsinki are developing an artificial intelligence-based solution that turns ordinary smartphones into cameras capable of detecting shades of colours extremely accurately.
