Iss is a company that received a Department of Defense SBIR/STTR grant for a project entitled: Compact quantitative near infrared device for combat casualty care. The abstract given for this project is as follows: The early recognition of severe hemorrhage is a key factor towards reducing mortality and morbidity from battlefield insults. Although near-infrared (NIR) instruments have shown promise in recognizing hemorrhage, specific confounding factors must be solved to be reliable in early hemorrhage. Our hypothesis is that these confounding factors can be eliminated by proper light-tissue interaction modeling (frequency-domain photon migration), and by increasing spectral (1000 wavelengths) and temporal (200 ms) bandwidth. The objective of this proposal is to provide a compact point-of-care NIR instrument that is capable of quantitatively detecting early hemorrhage and monitoring therapeutic interventions. Our proposal features collaboration between (1) a leading biomedical technology company (ISS, Inc., Champaign, IL) that produces state-of-the-art NIR tissue oximeters, operates production facilities and has FDA submission experience, and (2) a university research team (Beckman Laser Institute, UC Irvine), with tissue optics experts who have experience in the assessment of traumatic injury via NIR optical methods. The existing ISS oximeter will be modified to increase information content that will solve the confounding factors. At the conclusion of Phase I, we will provide a unique NIR instrument that will be available for comprehensive validation and optimization studies (Phase II) and subsequent commercial miniaturization (Phase III).

May 24, 2022 Boeing’s Starliner capsule is set to undock from the International Space Station tomorrow on May 25 and will make its return to Earth, landing in the White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico. NASA has made arrangements to broadcast the upcoming return activities live for the spacecraft. It is said that the spacecraft is scheduled to undock from the space station at 2:36pm ET on Wednesday (12:06am Thursday in India). Starliner was launched on May 19 from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida, beginning the Orbital Flight Test-2 mission, and successfully docked with the ISS a day later. starliner docked next to SpaceX‘s Dragon ship on the space station, making it the first time NASA‘s two commercial crew contractors had capsules attached to the space station. There were no astronauts aboard Starliner, which is designed to ferry people to and from the ISS, However, Starliner’s unscrewed spacecraft recently carried about 800 pounds cargo to the space station. Once NASA certifies the spacecraft, it is expected to carry up to four crew members. Though the Starliner program is running years behind schedule, its return to Earth after successful docking on the ISS is a good advance. NASA has lined up several events in the run-up to the touchdown of the spacecraft in New Mexico. The major events are as follows: May 24, Tuesday — 1:30pm ET (11:00pm IST) – Hatch closure coverage begins May 25, Wednesday
