BMW is planning to launch many battery-powered models, but so far none are dedicated sports cars. According to a rumor published by a British automotive outlet, BMW is working on a fully-electric sports car that could be called the iM2 (based on the next-gen 2 Series ). The report, which is said to be based on inside information obtained from an unnamed source, claims the vehicle will apparently have lots of power (1,000 kW or around 1,360 horsepower output) and it could arrive as early as 2022. However, we’re not so sure this rumor has any base in reality, neither when it comes to the stated power output or the year when it could be launched. BMW is celebrating the M division’s 50th anniversary next year, in 2022, and the report suggests the iM2 (whose internal code name is ‘Project Katharina’) would be the model to celebrate it. The original report, published by Car Magazine and picked up by Australia’s CarAdvice, also mentioned the iM2 is so powerful that it’s capable of breaking traction in a straight line at speeds of up to 120 km/h in dry conditions. Its claimed 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) sprint time is around the 2.5 seconds mark and it can reportedly lap the Nurburgring Nordschleife in 6 minutes and 50 seconds, or quicker than a Porsche 918 Spyder plug-in hybrid hypercar. Finally, this project has (unsurprisingly) reportedly not been given the green light for production. And even if it does go into production, it would probably be a super-limited series model with a very high price tag, unlike the upcoming i4 M which we’ve been told will have over 700 horsepower and draw from a big 120 kWh battery pack. Take this rumor with a very big grain of salt, as cool as such a project would be, especially based on the upcoming rear-wheel drive 2 Series. BMW may have made its entry level models front-wheel drive-biased, but for the two-door 2 Series, it’s sticking to the same platform as its larger models. And since the platform does support electrification, this basically means that this rumored iM2 is possible; it’s just very unlikely. More electric BMWs

December 10 (Renewables Now) - The European Investment Bank (EIB) on Tuesday signed an agreement with IM2 Energia Solar to help the Spanish multinational realise its Solar Storm 200 project involving the installation of 218 MW of photovoltaic (PV) parks in Spain. The agreement has been structured to make the EU lender an equity partner in the project with an investment of EUR 26 million (USD 28.8m). Solar Storm 200 is also supported by commercial banks providing project finance, the European Commission (EC) said today. The Solar Storm 200 project will entail the development and construction of 15 new PV parks which IM2 plans to install across the Spanish regions fo Extremadura, Andalusia, Murcia and the Valencian Community. It is expected to create 400 construction jobs and prevent 116,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) emission per year in the operation phase. The deal with the EIB will enable Solar Storm to be launched as the investment platform of Umbrella Capital – IM2's holding company – with an Independent Power Producer (IPP) focus and becoming a renewable power producer. IM2 currently provides development, engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) and operations and maintenance (O&M) services for residential and large-scale PV projects. (EUR 1.0 = USD 1.108)

Over in the world of internal combustion-engined cars, The BMW 2 Series and its M2 sibling are regarded as perhaps the most exciting vehicles available for buyers on a budget. Why not make an electric version then? That’s precisely what render David Olivares, a designer from Monterey, Mexico has done here. Olivares took the M performance division and combined it with BMW i sub-brand of electric vehicles. The result is the BMW iM2 seen here. Olivares says that the iM2 ” is a car made for the future driver aficionado. It bonds the user and the machine by providing him a raw control of the vehicle.”

Olivares adds:
“This series hopes to fill the gaps between the current BMW series. It sacrifices luxury, top speed and range to achieve great acceleration, balance and competitive price.”
Since it’s only a render, there are no specs available. However, we do applaud Olivares for thinking electric and for creating this bold iM2 design. This comes at a time when BMW itself seems to be dialing back its electric car efforts and is intent on offering only subpar plug-in hybrids across the BMW Group . That’s unfortunate, since we think a car such as this battery-only iM2 would really be a hit.

BMW iM2 Electric Render Is Wacky, But Awesome

IM2 is one the 20 Swiss National Centres of Competence in Research (NCCR) aiming at boosting research and development in several areas considered of strategic importance to the Swiss economy. The National Centers of Competence in Research are a research instrument managed by the Swiss National Science Foundation on behalf of the Federal Authorities. Granted for a maximum duration of 12 years, they are evaluated every year by a review panel, and renewed every four years. Success of the NCCRs is measured in terms of research achievements, training of young scientists (PhD students and postdocs), knowledge and technology transfer (including spin-offs), and advancement of women.
