Ilike in retirement – The memory remains and a Trabant – Car-Motor

Jul 15, 2022

July 15, 2022 When I suggested my topic to be written on these two pages of our magazine to my editor, he nodded: it’s taken. But this report – for objective reasons – did not come together. Then, racking my brain on a new topic, my colleague Cs. spoke up: – Write about Ilike! His life really deserves to be in our magazine. He was a taxi driver for many years, a company driver, although he is now retired. But he lives here in Pest, is easily accessible, and has such a “storyteller’s style” that you just have to memorize his words… Cs. was right. The only mistake I made was that I found Iliké, László Halassy, not in Pest, but in Andoc, Somogy county, as she was spreading corn for her chickens at 3 Rózsa Ferenc utca. in the yard of his house. When we sit opposite each other on the shaded terrace, and her husband brings out the freshly brewed coffee, he first asks: “How are the car-motorcycle colleagues?” “Thank you, good,” I answer, and then he greets everyone in turn. Because – I forgot to say – Ilike retired from the company where we also work. Taking advantage of his coffee break, I can finally ask him how his relationship with cars began? “…I had no fines or accidents” “It’s a long story,” he answers. The bottom line: after the Great Conflagration, as a consequence of it, as a 19-year-old young woman, with my six-week-old child in one arm and a five-kilogram package in the other, I was deported from Tallós in the highlands – along with myself – to Hungary. I was not able to see my husband again until long after that, of whom I didn’t even know whether he was alive or dead, because he was a soldier and then a prisoner of war. Luckily for me, my mother-in-law lived in Budapest, she took us in. Then, when my husband returned home and the second child arrived, the one salary was not enough. It was 1950 at the time, so I had to look for a job. That’s how I got to the taxi company, where after completing a driver’s course, they gave me a car. – I also know because of my age, that’s when many, many…um…”residents” of the abolished brothels became taxi drivers. “No, no,” he protests and calls the child by his name, “whores have become taxi drivers before.” “Your first taxi?” “It’s such an old, scrappy Renault that, even at top speed, I could tell whether the money lying next to the road was worth ten or twenty pennies.” “His request?” – Hourly wage of one forint and seven pennies… And of course, the tip. Without the latter, we earned about HUF 200 per month. And of course, as we were able to cut the passengers… – Even then? “For example?” – My cheapest trick was that if, say, the fare was 6.20, and the passenger paid with a tenner, I told him with doe eyes, an innocent face, and a slight rasp in my voice that I wouldn’t cause a big problem if I couldn’t return it. , since I don’t have a small… “What can I say, fraud technology is more advanced than this today.” And the tip is also more… True, the price of gasoline and the cost of repairing the car… Still, how much was the tip back then? He keeps busy both in the vegetable garden and in the engine compartment of the Trabi – Look, it still depended on the contact between the driver and the passenger. A tip of ten forints was considered a very large amount. “And the least?” – That record was held by the artist H., who has since passed away, with her eighty-filer tips. But he was known, what’s more, legendarily dirty, and not only when it came to taxi drivers. “He couldn’t fool her then…” – Come on… when the taxi fares were raised later, a multiplication table had to be put up next to the clock. My finger somehow always rested on the six, even though it should have stayed on the four. “How long was the taxi ride?” – For five years. I switched in 1955. At that time I had three children. “However, I think there were pleasant regular passengers as well.” – That’s right… There was, for example, an Italian animal buyer, a certain Mr. Fischer, who lived in Népszínház utca, he always asked for me by name on his trips. Thanks to him, even in the fifties, my children were provided with bananas and oranges… Then there was dear Uncle Vili Komlós, the excellent actor, whom I think I always took out on his horse. He regularly sent chocolates to my children. There are also documents that are much older than this “Why did you come from the taxi?” “They downsized… I became a worker.” I made folk art dolls back home. Luckily for me, not for long. A former taxi driver friend of mine, who became a car presenter for a company, hired me as a driver. I became the company’s material buyer with a Vauxhall 14. It was a terribly wrecked car. For example, if I wanted to turn onto Üllői út, I had to start turning the steering wheel to the left at Rákóczi út. Then I switched to a Tatraplan, and it was so rough that if it rained in Vienna, it was already sliding all over the place in Pest. Later I bought a Moskvich for myself. I told the diri, give me this. Good, but with this you have to undertake a trip to the countryside – said the condition. “Did you take it?” – Of course… That’s when I really got to know the country, it’s a different matter that instead of passengers, we had to transport industrial explosives, lighters and other things. I drove it for three years… And fixed it… V-belt change? AC pump replacement? Dynamo replacement? Naturally, I had to do all this. In the end, I got used to working in the garage quite well. I also put this to good use with my Trabim. On the road next to his 11-year-old Trabant – Your other jobs? – I was also a driver at the Hungarian Journalists’ Association for two years, then I joined Lapkiadó Vállalat, but I could only drive a Lada for three months, when they discovered that I also knew something about administration. I was added to the “highlighted” sa company’s inventory group. But really – I can say now – this work area was not my world. I retired in 1981 at the age of fifty-five. – They informed me that he bought this farmhouse last year. Did the village accept you? – In any case, the street is… I owe a lot to my immediate neighbors, the Tóváris, for example, since I never understood farm work. They taught me everything. “I see, he still uses his Trabant today.” – Yes, I put about 300 kilometers into this 11-year-old car every month. – With his extensive driving experience behind him, what irritates him the most on the roads and in traffic? “Not us, who!” Aggressive, violent drivers! The only thing that hurts: politeness has become a complete lack of traffic. “And what are you most proud of?” “Maybe because I was never fined.” But even better than that, I’ve never had an accident.
