HMV Digital China, Hualien Media break boundaries with new venture

HMV Digital China, Hualien Media break boundaries with new venture The China Post  Tuesday, July 4, 2017, 5:02 pm TWN SHARE 中文 TAIPEI, Taiwan -- A recent merger between the Hong Kong-listed HMV Digital China Ltd. and the Taipei-based Hualien Media International will help bring the best of entertainment content from Hong Kong and Taiwan to all Chinese-speaking markets, chairmen of both companies said in a meeting with local press in Taipei on Monday. George Hsieh (謝國樑), chairman of Hualien Media -- the Taiwanese entertainment group behind local hits including the NT$2.8-billion megahit "Our Times" (我的少女時代) -- said that making Taiwanese movies with a strong appeal in the Chinese-speaking market had long been his goal. He said this goal was built into the name of his company, which literally means "uniting the Chinese-speaking world." Hsieh, who is also the chairman and publisher of The China Post, said he had been in talks for a merger with HMV Digital since the second half of 2016. He stressed that the merger was conducted in strict compliance with the laws and regulations of Taiwan. Hsieh pointed out that the purpose of the merger of Hualien Media with HMV Digital was to enhance the former's ability to take Taiwanese movies out of the country, not only to benefit Taiwanese moviemaking industry but also to allow more people to see the quality films Taiwan has to offer. With the Closer Economic Partnership Arrangement, an economic agreement with Hong Kong and China, movies produced by HMV Digital can be distributed in the mainland Chinese market on the same terms as domestic titles, hugely increasing the profitability of Hualien-produced/distributed movies in mainland China. The venture will enhance the merged entity's ability to distribute the best of Hong Kong movies in Taiwan and the best of Taiwanese movies in Hong Kong, said Stephen Shiu (蕭定一), chairman of HMV Digital, an entertainment group involved in entertainment production and marketing, artist management and record production, as well as the operation of cinemas, HMV retail stores, online entertainment and an online shopping platform. Every region has its unique strength in terms of movie production: Hong Kong does action and crime movies well while Taiwan does artistic rom coms best in Greater China, Shiu said. The problem is that good movies from Hong Kong and Taiwan sometimes do not get the box-office results they deserve because they lack well-organized distribution and marketing strategies outside their home markets. The merger of HMV Digital and Hualien Media will address this issue by enabling early planning for Hong Kong and Taiwanese productions in outside markets. This merger of two top entertainment groups in Hong Kong and Taiwan will also increase their bargaining power in striking distribution deals with Hollywood studios.
