Sign Up × North East engineering firm Houghton International is investing in a new 20,000 sqft wind turbine repair facility. The Newcastle business said it is investing significantly to support the country’s energy transition by creating a dedicated wind turbine repair and life-extension facility at its Ronnie Mitten Works on Shields Road. It follows on from the completion of a project on an Enercon direct drive wind turbine in the Faroe Islands – its second successful project on such equipment. The company expects to see a large upturn in demand for its services in the coming years, driven by the need to generate clean energy and reduce the length of outages experienced when turbines fail. Michael Mitten, CEO, expects the investment in the dedicated wind turbine repair facility to be complete by the end of the year. He said: “We were a subcontractor on our first Enercon turbine repair project, but with this one we were the primary contractor, leading the entire job: diagnosing the fault; specifying the solution which included a marked improvement in the generator’s insulation system and weather proofing from the original design; then managing safe dismantling and logistics; executing the whole repair and life extension project; as well as reinstalling and commissioning the unit. All under incredibly challenging conditions in the Faroe Island’s volatile weather environment. “No other company in the world is offering a direct drive wind turbine repair and life-extension service, let alone primary project management. Our entire team, including our highly skilled subcontracted partners, really stepped up to the plate here, delivering huge value for our customer in a tight delivery window and incredibly challenging environment.” Michael Mitten, CEO of Houghton International (Image: handout from Houghton International) Repairing and life-extending direct drive turbines has taken roughly six months, which it said is quicker than waiting for a new replacement that can take up to two years to be delivered. The new investment in the repair facility within the company’s existing Ronnie Mitten Works will reduce lead times by roughly 20%. Mr Mitten added: “By breathing new life into wind turbine generators alongside other components, we are redirecting asset owners toward investing in repairs and life-extension over replacements, offering a more sustainable and cost-effective path forward for the industry. “Investing in facilities is one thing, but having the skills to do the work is another, hence we’ve recruited 10 new apprentices and trainees to support this future challenge. With this investment we are creating both the physical and human infrastructure to ensure we can cost effectively meet industry needs while supporting the necessary energy transition.” Story Saved You can find this story in   My Bookmarks. Seniton Technologyorporation

Seniton Technologyorporation is a company that received a SBIR Phase I grant for a project entitled: Developing an Ultra Energy Efficient Sensor Node Using RFID Technology. Their research project proposes to develop an ultra-energy efficient wireless sensor node using RFID technology. By providing ultra energy efficiency and hence extended network life time, the proposed solution can significantly reduce recurring maintenance cost due to replacing/recharging batteries and interruption of normal operation for networks with long deployment lifetime. The outcome of the proposed tasks is a prototype of a wireless sensor platform that will provide ultra-energy efficiency, at least 5-10 times improvement as compared to existing solutions. The approach is to uniquely combine wireless sensor platform with radio frequency identification (RFID) technology. In contrast to conventional designs where synchronized, periodic sleep/wakeup of sensor nodes are used as the dominant strategy for energy conservation, we employ an innovative asynchronous communication architecture, where sensor nodes are allowed to independently transmit without requiring any synchronization. The approach is fundamentally different from existing design paradigms; the innovative asynchronous communication architecture allows a sensor node to directly write data into a special, reactive module residing on the receiving node while its main platform is asleep. In this way, each individual sensor can schedule its own transmission without demanding any network-wide or local synchronization, thus resulting in a store-and-forward, asynchronous communication pattern in the network. Owing to the low duty cycle of a sensor node, the proposed asynchronous architecture will liberate the network from collisions and idle listening by fully exploiting time as one dimension of resource. The result is a design achieving order of magnitude improvement in energy efficiency. The extension of a wireless sensor network's life time will have significant commercial potential in saving recurring maintenance cost due to replacing/recharging batteries and disruption of normal operation for a technology with exploding market. Moreover, the technology can enable a plethora of applications, infeasible under existing designs, which demand extremely large scale sensor networks and ultra energy efficiency for long term operation. These include habitat, oceanic and planetary monitoring and surveillance of infrastructures. Furthermore, this integrative, and cutting edge project demands a systematic and synergistic approach that combines wireless networking, embedded system design, and lower power radio, and should also promote the fusion of knowledge in various domains by focusing on a mutual and challenging objective.
