Taylor Guitars Lands Top 10 Spot on Prestigious List ’ progressive stance on sustainability, including its concern about the destruction of the rainforests and the future of downed trees in California, has earned the El Cajon-based company a spot on Fast Company’s list of the “World’s Most Innovative Companies in the Manufacturing Sector for 2022.” Taylor, one of the world’s largest makers of acoustic guitars, was honored by Fast Company, the New York-based business media brand whose editorial focus is on innovation in technology, leadership and design. In considering companies for the prestigious honor, Fast Company looked at businesses that make the biggest impact on their industries – and to culture as a whole. Taylor came in at No. 9 on Fast Company’s list because of the company’s groundbreaking sustainability initiatives that show the manufacturer’s commitment to forest restoration and socially responsible business practices. Other companies receiving top honors from Fast Company include Solugen for using corn syrup to create industrial chemicals; Guardhat for creating a hard hat that has a chip in it to better locate workers in case of emergency; and Seebo for using Artificial Intelligence to reduce food waste and emissions by manufacturers including Nestle and Barilla. Taylor’s planting initiatives recognized by Fast Company are not only about securing wood for future guitars, but also about supporting the needs of participating communities, working toward healthier environments and economic opportunities. Andy PowersMaster DesignerTaylor Guitars Andy Powers, master guitar designer and an ownership partner at Taylor Guitars, said the company was honored to be included among other companies in manufacturing “who are developing the state of their industry.” Powers said that Taylor believes “that doing good for our community and doing good business are not exclusive of each other.” “The purposes of business can be more than merely generating income,” he said. “It’s through good business that opportunity grows. It’s important for any company to clearly identify their values because those form the foundation of their culture – those values guide how decisions are made, how a company develops relationships within their sphere, and how they operate in the broader world.” Ebony Project Continues to Aid African Communities Taylor’s Ebony Project in Cameroon was launched in 2019, eight years after the company bought a sawmill in the African country. The project has created a more socially responsible chain of supply for instrument components. In 2019, the project recorded the largest ebony planting in history in the Congo Basin. The company’s 2021 venture of Koa and Hawaiian Forest Restoration has planted 3,000 koa and more than 800 mixed native tree species in Hawaii. Closer to home, since 2020, Taylor has been working on an innovative urban wood sourcing initiative with West Coast Arborists, Inc., which manages more than 300 municipalities and public agencies in California and Arizona, caring for over 6 million trees. The initiative gives select trees in need of removal from California cities a second life as high-value instruments. Taylor introduced its first guitar featuring urban wood – Shamel ash – in 2020. More models followed last year. Taylor has sold more than 8,000 guitars from its Urban Ash guitar line since 2020. On March 12 of this year, Taylor Guitars took part in a statewide urban tree-planting event – “AMPlifying the Urban Forest.” Its goal was to plant 2,000 trees in 30 communities throughout California in a single day. Volunteers and representatives from West Coast Arborists, Taylor Guitars, California Urban Forests Council and the Western Chapter of the International Society of Arboriculture planted more than 100 trees altogether at Wells Park in El Cajon and Woodglen Vista Park in Santee. Scott PaulDirector of Natural Resource SustainabilityTaylor Guitars Scott Paul, the director of natural resource sustainability for the employee-owned Taylor Guitars, said the honor by Fast Company reinforces the investments the company has made around the globe to be part of reforestation and care of the earth. “We have an oversized responsibility to make sure that we are doing the right thing,” Paul said. “We have to drive change so we can continue to make guitars as we have for the last 200 years for the next 200 years. We try to keep our head down and do the right thing.” To drive that point home, Paul at the beginning of March was in Lyon, France, as part of the Standing Committee to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) of Wild Fauna and Flora. CITES is an agreement among governments around the globe to ensure that international trade of animals and plants does not threaten the survival of any species. Taylor said that one of the topics discussed at the meeting was continued worldwide concern about the future of rosewood trees, called “the ivory of the forest” by representatives of the United Nations back in 2016. Taylor has been at the forefront of protecting the rosewood species. Protecting Rosewood Since 2017, Brazilian rosewood has been listed as needing special clearance to be exported and imported. Prized for its use in traditional Chinese furniture, rosewood has been called the most widely traded illegal wild product in the world. Taylor Guitars imports some sawn rosewood for its guitar parts and keeps its paperwork in order to stay in compliance with the pact. “I think within the music industry, we are all very aware of the importance of sustainability,” Paul said. “We are also very aware that the world is changing very, very fast. For a couple hundred years, the music industry was able to source material with little difficulty. “But with losing forest coverage, regulation and maybe most importantly a growing consumer demand and interest in transparency, means we have a greater responsibility across all industries for good initiatives to be taking place.” Powers said that Taylor Guitars has long championed and established a culture of doing business in an ethical, socially responsible way. “Our goal is to do our work in a way that benefits musicians, our employees and our suppliers, while being good stewards of our natural resources to leave them better than the way we found them,” he said. “Commitment to these ideals has guided the company’s growth. “As a company, we want to have the best partners, and we want to be the best partner to them, because being an integrated part of our community is what allows us all to thrive through both successful and challenging times.” Taylor Guitars
