Owner-breeder Michael Christian never thought he would miss a Victoria Derby and never thought Bella Nipotina would get beyond 1200m, but the Giga Kick Stakes made it a day for firsts. “I never missed a Derby day but when you have one running for more than $3 million you have to be here,” Christian said. “We sent her up for The Shorts, which was worth $1 million, and when she was in contention for the Sprint Series, so there was no decision to make, we had to be here. She has had 41 starts and never been to 1300m before but she ran it out strong.”
Bella Nipotina had found the rail behind a moderate tempo and Craig Williams saved energy and waited for a late crack at them. It was the perfect formula. Loading
Favourite Think About It hit the front at the top of the straight but his stablemate Private Eye went past him inside the 200m and looked the winner at the 100m. But Bella Nipotina ($10) lifted on the fence and won by a nose, even through Nash Rawiller got his throw at the line right on Private Eye ($2.70) with Think About It ($1.90) 1¼ lengths back in third. “Craig rode her beautifully, she got the split just at the right time, if it was any later she wouldn’t have got there,” co-trainer David Eustace said. “She has just been racing so well this prep and we came into the race really confident of her running a massive race because she had been building and building and building.“
Nash Rawiller was shattered in defeat on Private Eye. “The horse was brilliant. It’s hard not to be disappointed. He ran his heart out and had the perfect run,” Rawiller said. “Full credit to the winner [Bella Nipotina], just got a bit strung up getting through but it attacked the line but we were left a bit of a sitting shot.“

Sam Clipperton said the Giga Kick was one run too far for Think About It. “He peaked on Everest day and just couldn’t peak again,” Clipperton said. Gibbons make run for Sweet Mercy
Dylan Gibbons knew he had the horse to win the Four Pillars for most of the straight, but it was the way he found a run for Sweet Mercy that was breathtaking at Rosehill on Saturday. Sweet Mercy was storming home and Gibbons went for a small gap and turned out Burning Need at about the 100m mark and charged to victory. “I knew I had the horse if I could get through and when I first pitched for the run, she hesitated a bit, which I can’t blame her for one bit,” Gibbons said. “But once we opened it enough, she was full of running and I never even had to touch her, it was a great win.”
Sweet Mercy ($19) exploded away to win by 1¼ lengths from Oakfield Waratah ($12) with Burning Need($9.50) a nose back in third. “He was going to be unlucky but he made the run and that was the difference,” Sweet Mercy’s trainer David Payne said. Wild Planet breaks drought in Rosehill Gold Cup
Wild Planet hadn’t won for more than three years, but it was his day in the Rosehill Gold Cup. He had been seen as a miler by the Hawkes stable but they took the chance to step him out to 2000m and Wild Planet ($26) was strong to beat Queensland Derby placegetter Stoke Of Luck ($4.80) and Shock ’Em Over ($7) with only neck and nose separating them. “I said pre-race, these older horses you’ve got to stretch them out when you can. And today I actually did really think he could win,” co-trainer Michael Hawkes said. “He had a lightweight chance. It was only the 2000m that we didn’t know about but he actually won very well. “He jumped and travelled well. He probably got a little further back than what I would have liked but Tyler [Schiller] got on the back of the horse going forward and it flushed him out four-deep but he didn’t panic. He just cuddled and cuddled him and he got the bikkies.”
It gave the Hawkes stable a winning double after Mars Mission won earlier in the day and Schiller another big race win.
