Orbo.ai buys Gemia to expand facial recognition features

May 5, 2020

May 5, 2020 Indian biometrics developer Orbo.ai has purchased U.S.-based startup Gemia to boost its facial recognition capabilities, reports Inc42 . Previously part of AI company Arvi Inc, Gemia is an online tool for photo enhancement. The service will still be provided on a subscription basis. Orbo.ai leverages deep learning technology to improve image resolution. By purchasing Gemia, it can mix biometric facial recognition with machine learning to deliver additional features for media, entertainment, manufacturing and healthcare sectors, according to the report. Orbo was founded in 2015 by Manoj Shinde. In an interview with Inc42 earlier this year, Shinde explained the company developed edge-based facial models that leverage neural networks to detect approximately 106 facial landmarks, including jawline, the borders of lips, eyes, nose, hairline and contours. Gemia will release more software enhancements, including a cloud-based service for video editing. Gemia’s founder Mykhailo Dementii explained the integration with Orbo’s technology can speed up photo editing and the move to automated SaaS tools. Companies that use Orbo.ai’s technology include Intel, Cisco, GE Healthcare, Samsung, TCS, KPMG and DataMatics, as well as camera manufacturers and video conferencing software developers. Investors include Intel’s Vinod Dham, Bollywood singers Harmeet Singh and Manmeet Singh, and AJ Ventures.
