Bob Goldsborough Chicago Tribune Hindale's "Batman" pool sits on a recently divided lot. Developers plan to build two new homes in its place. The infamous "Batman" pool in Hinsdale is about to be done in — but not by the Riddler, the Penguin or the Joker. A Burr Ridge developer is planning to remove the pool — and the Depression-era home next to it — as part of a plan to subdivide its 1.67-acre property at the southeast corner of County Line Road and Woodland Avenue in Hinsdale into two single-family lots. In 2010, bloggers armed with satellite imagery discovered that a house in Hinsdale had an enormous and easily visible Batman logo in the bottom of its swimming pool. The home's longtime owners, the Emmert family, initially urged bloggers not to divulge their home's location. In 2012, the Emmerts placed their English-style home and property which included a tennis court and gazebo on the market, asking $2.7 million. They had the home, at 510 Woodland Ave., on and off the market at lower prices over the next two and a half years. During that period, the Emmert family allowed their listing agents to mention the Batman pool as a selling point. In October, the Emmerts sold the property for $1.795 million to dentist Koushan Azad. In August, Burr Ridge-based McNaughton Development bought the property from Azad for $1.865 million. Several weeks earlier, McNaughton had won approval from Hinsdale officials to subdivide the land into two lots. Developer Paul McNaughton Jr. told Elite Street that "everything is coming down," including the pool and the home. "The pool falls right in the building envelope (of one house)," he said. "There's no way to save that. " McNaughton said his firm plans to raze the home and the pool in the next several weeks. They intend to build two large Tudor-style homes designed by Hickory Hills-based Michael Buss Architects. Bob Goldsborough is a freelance reporter.
