November 27, 2013 at 12:16 pm November 16, 2014 at 7:58 am GeekWire Awards: Tickets available now! Seattle, for whatever odd reason, is home to a handful of food-oriented and recipe sites, including big players such as AllRecipes.com (attracting more than one billion visits annually) and some smaller upstarts like BigOven and Foodista . And those sites and mobile apps are humming here today as folks across the country scramble to come up with their favorite mince meat pie and cranberry relish recipes. At an event in Seattle last week, Eamon Gavin , director of network and data center operations at AllRecipes.com, said that they’ve been prepping well in advance for today, the busiest day of the year for the company. One of the big changes that the company implemented last year was creating a dedicated mobile site, so that those who visited on a device could have a better experience. “Last year, we had significant traffic, and this year it is going to be two times or four times that,” he said. AllRecipes.com is a Microsoft .Net shop, with Gavin saying that they are “probably one of the busiest .Net shops out there.” BigOven, founded by Seattle entrepreneur Steve Murch, is heading toward 10 million downloads of its apps. It also just launched a new Thanksgiving Advice Center , just to capitalize on the inbound traffic that flows in this week. That includes turkey calculators in which users enter how many people will be attending the dinner, and it will tell you how big a turkey you need. “We’re really focused on the mobile planning process of pulling together events like Thanksgiving – from planning to grocery shopping to preparation,” Murch says. Meanwhile, this is a pretty cool look at the top recipes by state , compiled using data from AllRecipes.com filtered through Tableau. Of course, we all know that folks in Washington love their apple pie, but did you know that the top salad is a cranberry spinach salad or that the favorite side dish is green bean casserole. Those are just some of the nuggets you can uncover in the interactive graphic.
