Tech advisory firm Konversational bucks trend with plan to double size of its workforce in the next 12 months

Nov 10, 2022

Irish-based tech advisory firm Konversational is bucking the trend in the sector by doubling its workforce, instead of shedding staff. As global giants Twitter, Meta and Zendesk join Irish unicorns Stripe and Flipdish in cutting jobs, entrepreneur and Konversational co-founder John Gilleran is planning to expand, he told the Irish Independent. “I’ve been in this space for 20 years, right, so I’ve seen a few different cycles. I don’t really fear it. We just kind of trade through it. There’s no such thing as a recession-proof business. That doesn’t exist. We’re pretty comfortable that we can, maybe, double the size of our organisation again next year, without having to do anything.” Richard Guy, Konversational’s other co-founder, says the slowdown might even benefit his firm, given the recent difficulties in hiring tech talent across the world. “Even in a slowdown, the projects with the positive business case still get signed off, and still get through, so I’m not too concerned about it,” Mr Guy said. “If anything, it probably means there’s a bit more talent out there that we can try and bring on the journey with us.” Two years after its launch, Konversational is already profit-making thanks to a business model that focuses on rolling out US software supremo ServiceNow’s products to firms in Ireland and the UK. Mr Gilleran and Mr Guy step in to school firms that have bought ServiceNow’s cloud-based platforms, helping them to automate anything from customer service to security and hiring. With 16 projects ongoing in Ireland and the UK, they are targeting large firms in the tech, retail and financial services sectors that moved faster into digitisation as a result of the pandemic. “There certainly was a change in the way interactions happened during the pandemic,” Mr Guy said “I think that kind of accelerated that understanding that people are more efficient if they’re typing, rather than if they’re talking, and you can probably have two or three WhatsApp conversations ongoing at the same time, but you can only talk to one person.” 7 Things: Adrian Weckler on Tech Tech’s stars and turkeys rounded up and served to you every Friday by Ireland’s No. 1 technology writer.
