Indus App Bazaar expects to scale up after CCI-Google order: Cofounder

Oct 26, 2022

Synopsis ET’s Subhrojit Mallick caught up with Rakesh Deshmukh, co-founder of Indus App Bazaar, India’s largest localised app store for a freewheeling chat on what the CCI order against Google means for companies like Indus. ETtech India’s antitrust watchdog has championed the cause of independent app developers and local app stores of India, holding Google guilty of abusing its dominant market position to stifle competition and innovation in the Android mobile ecosystem. ET’s Subhrojit Mallick caught up with Rakesh Deshmukh, co-founder of Indus App Bazaar , India’s largest localised app store for a freewheeling chat on what the CCI order means for companies like Indus. What is Indus OS' opinion about the CCI order against Google ? The CCI's order for fair practices in the Mobile industry is a respite for all the stakeholders. This is fantastic news for all startups in India to build competitive products. As an app store, we are delighted by the decision of being allowed to distribute alternative app stores through the default Android app store, Google Play Store. This will help us provide a choice to the users and help in scaling the business for apps with finer services. We will continue our work towards building a seamless experience for the user, which can only happen once Google allows the same Android permissions, the Play Store has, such as installing from unknown sources, etc. We will continue working to build a level playing field for all alternative app stores in the Android universe. How has IndusOS been impacted by Google's anti-competitive practices? Please share a few instances. We built our own operating system in 2013 with an emphasis on Indian languages. In that process, we have seen a lot of restrictions. It has posed obstacles in establishing a level playing field for competing applications. It has reached the point where we have seen multiple contracts inked with mobile OEMs mandating the use of GMS and Google applications, and restricting the distribution of apps through alternative app stores. For example, we cannot distribute our app store directly to the customer through the Play Store. With this order, access to distribute our app store has been unlocked. However, Google still flags all third-party app stores, warning users of "external or untrusted sources" whenever they install such app stores, and again when an application is installed through these app stores. Discover the stories of your interest Google also prohibits us from offering customized services on Android mobile devices. From our decade-long experience, we realized that if there has to be safe competition, alterations need to be made both at the OEM and secondary Android levels. How will the CCI order benefit IndusOS? How will it impact Android consumers? Among other things, the CCI order has allowed alternative app stores access to distribution from Google Play Store. It also says that users can now delete the pre-installed Google applications on Android mobile phones. Hence, it is a milestone judgment for us. This lends a great deal of confidence to the app industry as a whole, as companies can now compete and build better products customized for India. How is Indus OS circumventing Google's anti-competitive practices presently? Currently, due to restrictions on the alternative app stores, we cannot reach users directly. So we have partnered with Samsung to power its flagship app store, Galaxy Store. This allows us to serve users with unique features of Indus App Bazaar through Samsung devices. Does Indus OS have alternatives to popular Google apps like Maps, YouTube, Gmail, etc? What has been the consumer reception of them? Indus OS is an alternative to Google’s Play Store. We have built India’s largest indigenous app store, Indus App Bazaar. It serves its 200Mn+ users with 400K+ personalized and localized apps in 12 Indian languages. The users have been positive of the product, and hence Indus App Bazaar has served 2.5 Bn+ app installs and updates till now. Read More News on
