No Comments For the centenary of her birth, the poet and essayist Fina García Marruz is remembered in the Voices of the Republic Colloquium; during the commemorative panel, one of her speeches will highlight the particular resonance of her verses, full of humanism “I was not lucky enough to meet her personally, but through reading and studying her works I have enjoyed a loving teaching that has led me to feel more deeply not only my condition as a Cuban, but even my religious faith,” she says. Juan Lázaro Besada, one of the vice presidents of the José Martí Cultural Society from Sancti Spiritus. Juan Lázaro Besada feels Fina’s work is very close to his own concerns, both intellectual and human. / Courtesy of the interviewee The also poet, essayist and president of the municipal council of that organization in Trinidad, will participate in the panel that the 25th edition of the Voices of the Republic Colloquium (organized by the provincial SCJM, under the auspices of the system of cultural institutions) will dedicate to Fina García marroz. Her dissertation will deal with the poetics of who, “with complete justice, must be considered, along with Dulce María Loynaz, one of the most important female lyrical voices in the Spanish language during the 20th century.” -Why do you highlight that aspect and not refer to your essays? -Fina García Marruz is not only a poet of the highest quality and transcendence. As an essayist she deserves to appear among the prominent figures of our letters; however, her poetic creation has accents of an original resonance. Fina’s concern, from her position as a Catholic, full of humanism, allows us to discover in her verses a particular commitment to human betterment through poetry. Even in her essays on José Martí there is a high dose of lyrical sensitivity. What would you have liked to talk to her about? Is there any unknown left in the air to be cleared up? -There would be many such topics, but I would highlight three: your relationship with the Spanish philosopher María Zambrano, your passionate dedication to Martí’s work and a disagreement with your thought, because she said that the Simple verses from Martí they were truncated tenths; Despite the enormous respect that Fina’s work and life inspire in me, I do not share that last criterion. -Do you think it has been sufficiently recognized in Cuba? -Recognized, yes. In the cultural sphere, she is an essential figure. Known, not enough. Perhaps because she was seen above all as the wife of Cintio Vitier and not as the outstanding intellectual that she was and will continue to be. There is no doubt, it is impossible to write the history of Cuban culture during the 20th century without referring to it. “It would be very useful to organize conference cycles where their contributions are promoted and analyzed; and, when possible, reissue some of his volumes that are not found today in bookstores, which would represent a true gift for those who wish to penetrate that spirit of all sensitivity, love and Cuban roots”. –I take this opportunity to ask you, how has it evolved and what is the current situation of Voices of the Republic? -The colloquium has been maturing year after year. At present it is a consolidated space, attended by researchers from all over the country and where little known and studied facets of the Republican period between 1902 and 1959 are discovered. It is very significant that more young people participate each year, which augurs a permanent freshness . -Other activities conceived by the José Martí Cultural Society in Sancti Spíritus? -Among the various options, the event could be highlighted Echoes of Revolution, which takes place in Jatibonico; the one dedicated to Fernando Martínez Heredia, in Yaguajay; the martian symposium With everyone and for the good of all, already habitual in Trinidad. Café Bonaparte takes place at the provincial headquarters, the meeting that we have called Martí, universal man; the sample of plastic arts destined to the miniatures. “The branch from Sancti Spiritus remains active and we are willing to continue working to reaffirm the values of our culture.” #Sensitivity #Cuban #roots
