VC Roundup: Sense Infosys raises $1.45m, ExpertDB raises $500k, BonAppetour secures $500k

May 27, 2016 May 27, 2016: &nbsp Maritime data analytics startup Sense Infosys has secured a $1.45 million Series A round, consulting marketplace ExpertDB has raised a $500,000 seed investment and BonAppetour has secured a $500,000 seed round. Sense Infosys secures $1.45m Series A investment Sense Infosys , a three-year-old data analytics and data science consulting venture founded by former naval officer Stephen Chow , has secured a Series A investment of US$1.45 million, led by Jason Venture and Cap Vista . Jason Venture, a returning investor, is the investment arm of marine and offshore systems integration firm Jason Marine Group . Cap Vista is the investment arm of the Singapore governments Defence Science and Technology Agency (DSTA) .The investment sees the addition of CTO Yong Kai Chin . Describing itself as focusing on maritime and security data, it provides data science consultancy services and access to its proprietary technology product Klaver. According to its website, Klaver “streamlines the data acquisition process and employs intelligent fusion techniques to amalgamate data into an accurate, coherent picture”, in order to provide information and insights. The firm, which is accredited by the IDA – providing a competitive advantage locally in securing government contracts and Singapore-based corporations – list solutions such as maritime situation awareness analytics and vessel tracking, as well as services related to data mining and analysis, predictive modelling application development. Focused on serving government agencies and related entities in the B2G sector , the micro-enterprise caters to not only the government sector, but also to the defence, maritime, and oil and gas industries. According to media reports, it is also intending to further penetrate the government analytics market. Commenting on the investment, Jason Marine Group executive chairman Joseph Foo said,”The maritime domain is under-going digital transformation, data growth and connectivity. We see immense opportunity in maritime data analytics, intelligent ship and smart port. With their leadership, coupled with their strong engineering and domain expertise, Sense Infosys is poised to exploit this opportunity.” ExpertDB secures $500k seed investment On-demand consulting platform ExpertDB , founded by  Phalgun Raju , has secured $500,000 in seed funding from unnamed investors and will lauch in 150 countries. Based in Singapore, ExpertDB is an two-sided online consulting marketplace that lets users discover and hire consultants for calls or projects across different industries such as manufacturing, sales and distribution, marketing and PR, legal, IT, and big data. Expert matching is conducted via algorithms, with an integrated messaging feature permitting both parties to vet project fits for free and negotiate financial terms of a consulting contract, such as remuneration and timelines. Via the platform, consultants can track their billable hours via the ExpertDB’s submission log. Following project completion, clients can review and rate their consultant, ensuring transparency and maintaining the quality of consultant listed in the marketplace. “During our private beta, we were working with Fortune 1000 companies and top management consulting and private equity firms who were hiring experts in our marketplace across an amazing array of topics. Managers and investment professionals at these firms were hiring experts to do everything – from solving engineering and data science problems to providing industry insights or driving small M&A deals,” says Raju. Raju conceptualised the venture’s business case following her tenure in various corporate roles, sharing that she and her teams often had to engage subject matter experts  to inform decision-making and understand the operating practices and protocols of various industries. However, the process of seeking out such consultants was highly inefficient and reliant on referrals, while large consulting firms and expert networks often charged rates that were prohibitive to the budgets of most smalle & medium enterprises (SMEs). Observing the large pool of professionals globally who desire autonomy in determining their working conditions and pay and the flexibility to determine which projects they take on, with 1 million professionals in the US alone, Raju has developed a platform that resolves these pain points. ExpertDB’s database involved charging a 10 per cent cut of what experts charge for their projects. While Raju has declined to disclose transaction volume on the site, she claims that 95 per cent of projects in the system are matched with the relevant expert within a 48 hour window. BonAppetour raises $500k seed investment Singapore-based social dining platform BonAppetour , incepted in 2013 by the team of Inez Wihardjo , Rinita Vanjre Ravi and Giovanni Casinelli , the venture has secured a US$500,000 seed investment from serial entrepreneur Wong Toon King and Indonesian VC fund  Prasetia Dwidharma . A social dining platform that links travellers to local hosts who provide home-cooked meals, its social element lies in how it enables travellers to connect with their destination and its community as a local level, via the hospitality of dining providers. The venture is likely to benefit from the involvement of Wong, whose depth of experience extends to food & beverage, given his involvement with developing the Ben & Jerry’s brand in Singapore. Currently, BonAppetour lists more than 500 hosts on its platform. In an interaction with Tech in Asia, BonAppetour co-founder Ravi, who serves as CEO, explained: “The sharing economy space has been heating up, and now people are getting more and more open to the idea of dining with locals, compared to three years ago when we started the business.” “In fact, our past diners keep coming back to us mentioning how BonAppetour was the highlight of their trip, and keep requesting for BonAppetour experiences in newer cities. We knew it was time to increase our presence,” she added. To date, the venture has established communities in European tourist hubs like Paris, Rome, and Barcelona. They curate hosts prior to their listing on the platform, visiting their homes and sampling their cooking, as well as ensuring their compliance with local hygiene regulations. According to BonAppetour, the investment will fund its expansion to culinary hubs worldwide, include to popular tourist cities such as Tokyo, Bangkok and Melbourne. Also Read:
