Why the future of European FTTP rollout depends on networking monitoring and performance

26 October, 2021 at 4:04 PM Posted by: Anasia D'mello Wim te Niet of EXFO While the Coronavirus pandemic has thrust the need for fibre-to-the-premise (FTTP) into the limelight, giving consumers and businesses access to high-speed broadband has been a priority for some years now. With many consumer and business services now bandwidth-dependent, broadband access is essential. This is putting extra pressure on operators to accelerate the pace of FTTP deployment and reduce the impact of customer churn. But FTTP rollout across Europe is simply not happening fast enough. While countries like the UK have been aggressive with FTTP rollout in part due to regulation, which has been driving competition and investment in fibre networks it still lags behind many European countries. In fact, according to FTTH Council Europe’s 2021 Market Panorama report, FTTH/B coverage in the UK is only at 15%, and in Germany it is at 16%. While countries like Iceland, Spain and Portugal, are close to a full fibre reality (with 90%, 88% and 83% coverage respectively). Contextualised in hard numbers, the UK’s and Germany’s low-level coverage means there are still a staggering 35 million homes (34,700,000) to pass with fibre in the UK, and nearly 24 million (23,850,000) in Germany. Of course, there’s no denying that the move to full fibre is a huge undertaking replacing copper networks that have served as the main means of communication for the last 100 years, and replacing these with fibre networks that will serve for the next 100 years to come. So, what do operators in European markets, and specifically the UK and Germany, need to do to fast-track their way to full fibre? Ensuring reliable connectivity in first-time-right rollout is key to meeting ambitious deployment targets so that expensive and time consuming remedial works are not required once deployed, as is often the case today. Thus, in the same way that copper networks have been monitored 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, new fibre networks will need the same level of network performance monitoring, too, and is just as important in the build phase as it is during the operational phase. With many operators turning to outsourcing to meet their ambitious deployment targets, technologies such as machine learning and AI will be key in delivering first-time-right rollout they are key for troubleshooting applications, discovering network degradations so that the service providers can respond proactively. Automated, accurate testing in line with operators’ measurement and performance also acts as a huge OPEX saver. In addition, automated solutions can track, in real-time, KPIs and performance ensures that operators are able to track and meet their weekly and monthly rollout plans.
