Google is upgrading its Cloud resources with AMD “Milan” EPYC processors

Gives The reason why Google decided to create an “N2D” family of VMs within the “N2” class last year was the results of tests conducted by Google, according to which instances based on AMD EPYC “Rome” processors were up to 39% faster than equivalent instances based on Intel Xeon processors, measured in the industry standard Coremark benchmark. Due to the huge demand for computing resources that enable the expansion of teleworking, Google has decided to further improve the capacity and power of the “N2D” class of General Purpose Virtual Machines this year. Given the test results, Google again opted for the AMD EPYC processor, but this time based on the third “Milan” generation. The performance acceleration brought by the transition from AMD EPYC “Rome” processors to AMD EPYC “Milan” processors is on average 30%, according to Google measurements. The use of AMD EPYC processors has enabled Google to be the leader among public Cloud providers when it comes to the amount of processor cores they offer to the end user. Also, the “N2D” class provides exceptional flexibility in sizing Virtual Machines against a variety of user needs. “N2D” offers up to 9TB of local SSD space, as well as a 100Gbps high-bandwidth network. One of the first users of the “N2D” class of Virtual Machines was the company Fullstory. These are their impressions after the “upgrade” to AMD “Milan” EPYC processors: “During our testing, the latest N2D instances, based on AMD Milan processors, showed that certain queries execute approximately 29% faster, on average, compared to the previous N2D generation . We expect that this acceleration will dramatically affect the employment of resources and thus the better experience of our users. “ Thanks to the performance and flexibility of the N2D instance, Google has attracted many new customers, and one of the more famous names among them is Vimeo. Here are their reasons for using the new N2D instances: “Most of our video content is CPU processed and encoded in H.264, HEVC and AV1, for optimal image vividness and minimal artifacts. Google’s new N2D instances based on AMD “Milan” processors have made a huge improvement for our users by dramatically reducing transcoding time by up to 20%, allowing us to reduce costs to a similar extent. “ The next step is to improve the N2D instance with the capabilities of “Confidential Computing”. The essence is in the encryption of memory data at the time of their processing, and this is possible thanks to security technologies such as “SEV” (Secure Encrypted Virtualization) which are implemented at the hardware level within the AMD “Milan” EPYC processor.
