Environcom handed £55,000 bill for polluting plastic

Aug 5, 2021

05 August, 2021By Mark Smulian Share Comment Add to Bookmarks Lincolnshire waste firm Environcom England has been fined for failing to comply with its environmental permit in a prosecution by the Environment Agency (EA). The company pleaded guilty and was fined only £100 but was ordered to pay the EA’s £35,000 costs and give £20,000 to the Lincolnshire Rivers Trust for other related breaches. In March 2016, Environcom had approximately 2,900 bags (3,234 tonnes) of plastic polyurethane dust, known as PUR, stored on-site, which was almost 65 times more than the weight its permit allowed. EA officials visited the premises 15 times in four years, sometimes with Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue Service, the Health & Safety Executive and local authority. The court heard that Environcom operates a waste electrical and electronic equipment recycling plant. When refrigerators and freezers are recycled, they produce PUR as a by-product, which can be ignitable and present a potential fire hazard. PUR is “almost impossible to remove if it escapes into the wider environment, causing plastic pollution if not stored correctly”, the EA said. Yvonne Daly, EA environment manager for Lincolnshire and Northamptonshire, added: “Poor management and a lack of contingency planning at Environcom resulted in an ongoing fire and pollution risk at the premises. “I hope this prosecution acts to remind Environcom and other waste business of their obligations.” 2021-08-05
