Coventry schoolchildren benefit from new sports project

Five local primary schools including Cannon Park Primary School , Finham Park Primary School , Moathouse Community Primary School , Sir Frank Whittle Primary School and Wyken Croft Primary School have signed up to take part in Engage Education – a new project which has been launched to give schoolchildren access to high-quality sports coaching. The pilot programme, which forms part of a wider community rugby initiative called Engage, will give children in Years 3, 4 and 5 access to weekly coaching. Cannon Park Primary School was the first to trial the new Engage Education sports programme Cannon Park Primary School was the first to trial the new Engage Education sports programme Pupils at Cannon Park Primary School were the first to take part when they spent a morning learning about the values, teamwork, integrity, respect, discipline and enjoyment of the sport. Steve Ainge, headteacher at Cannon Park Primary School in Bransford Avenue, said: “The Engage Education project fits in perfectly with what we are trying to do at Cannon Park and the values it promotes are not just vital for success in sport but are transferable to all areas of the curriculum.” Paul Breed , CEO of Coventry Sports Foundation , said: “Engage Education has been launched to support the delivery of sport in schools as it is important that lessons not only focus on improving physical wellbeing but on character development too.” Cannon Park Primary School was the first to trial the new Engage Education sports programme The Engage Education project has also received support from Councillor David Kershaw , who visited Cannon Park Primary School to watch the sports sessions in action. He said: “The project focuses on much more than just teaching the game. It uses activities as a means of social enrichment to develop healthy, well-rounded and confident young people.”
