Indie-Rae Jackson underwent major heart surgery at 11 weeks old, and is currently on a machine that works her heart and lungs for her as she is too weak. Her parents Ellie and Ethan are now facing an agonising wait to find out whether she will need more surgery. The couple, from South Shields , were thrilled to be bringing their first child into the world. But when Ellie, 24, was 31 weeks pregnant, the midwife had requested a growth scan as Indie-Rae seemed to be “measuring a bit small”. The scan showed the growth was fine, but staff noticed the baby had an enlarged heart. At 33 weeks and six days she was diagnosed with Ebstein’s Anomaly - a rare congenital heart defect that affects one in 200,000 people. The condition affects the tricuspid valve, meaning that the valve on the right doesn’t function the way a normal heart would, and that Indie-Rae isn’t getting enough blood to her lungs. Indie-Rae Jackson minutes after birth with parents Ellie and Ethan Terrifyingly, Ellie and Ethan, 22, were told their baby had a 50/50 chance of survival at birth. “I just genuinely thought I was going to lose her,” Ellie said. After a 29-hour labour, Indie-Rae was born at Newcastle’s Royal Victoria Infirmary on September 2, weighing 5lbs 8oz. Ellie said: “I had her on me for three seconds and then she got rushed to the Freeman Hospital . “It was a forceps delivery and she came out black and blue.” Indie-Rae Jackson Indie-Rae spent 10 days in the Freeman, where she was connected to a breathing machine, ventilated, given heart medicine and sedated. The hospital managed to get her stable in her condition and the family were discharged home. Ellie said: “It was a massive achievement with what we got told after her birth. She showed all good signs and was well enough to come home. “We treasured the most amazing six weeks home with her, being able to even pick her up for a cuddle when we wanted was the most amazing feeling in the world. “I can’t actually put into words how we felt being able to just do the ‘normal’ family things in life.” Indie-Rae Jackson with dad Ethan before surgery But when Indie-Rae was eight weeks old, Ellie and Ethan took her to hospital when she turned blue and started struggling to breathe. She was transferred from South Tyneside to Sunderland hospital, and ultimately back to the Freeman, where she was moved into paediatric intensive care (PICU). At nine weeks old, Indie-Rae underwent surgery to close the open duct in her heart that was affecting blood flow. The procedure did not go to plan and surgeons went to “plans B and C,” repairing the valve “to an appropriate extent” - to hopefully see her through until she is older and bigger. Indie-Rae came out of surgery after 11 hours on November 5, and since then has been on an Ecmo machine, which is keeping her alive by doing all the work for her heart and lungs. Indie-Rae Jackson with mum Ellie Gibson before surgery Ellie and Ethan are now keeping watch anxiously by Indie’s side in hospital as they wait to find out if she has recovered well enough, or if she needs more surgery. Ellie said: “They plan to wean Indie off the Ecmo machine within the next few days and we are keeping everything crossed that it all goes to plan and she’s able to do all the work on her own. “We’ve been told to prepare for a long period of time in hospital, but they’ve got no idea how long it could be. There’s no timescale.” In the meantime, Ellie and Ethan have both had to take time off work to care for Indie-Rae. Ellie, who has her own beauty therapy business, said, “I’m self-employed so that’s been a nightmare, having no income.” Indie-Rae Jackson “Anyone who has been in our position will know exactly how hard it is.” The family have raised more than £1,000 for the Children’s Heart Unit Fund (CHUF), which has supported them, and they are planning to do the same for the Sick Children’s Trust, which has provided them with accommodation on the hospital grounds while Indie-Rae is at the Freeman. Friends and family have also started an online fundraising page to help make things easier for Ellie and Ethan while they are off work.
