McGraw Hill & Edutor to offer digitised textbooks for higher education

Jan 28, 2016

1 0 McGraw Hill Education India (MHE) has tied up with Edutor Technologies’ IGNITOR , which provides tablets with educational content, to provide MHE’s Education book catalog in a digital format and distribute across universities and colleges. IGNITOR will digitise over 5,000 titles from MHE across 40 streams including engineering, management, medicine, science, arts and commerce for undergraduate and postgraduate students. The digital textbooks will also be enhanced with inbuilt audio and videos and allow students to annotate, highlight and take notes. Teachers will be given support resources which can add Q&A sessions, graphic representations of concepts and presentations. MHE states that the solution has already been implemented at SRM University, IIM Kozhikode, Great Lakes Institute of Management, VIT University and Thiagaraja School of Management. Both the companies aim to have 1,000 educational institutes on their platform. Edutor Technologies, which was launched in 2010, claims that over 80,000 students have used its IGNITOR platform across K12, higher education and test preparation material. Advertisement McGraw Hill’s previous digital course platform: Way back in 2012, Vriti, an e-learning company (which shut down in 2014), had partnered with then Tata McGraw Hill Education to launch free, online ‘smart courses’ for engineering and management subjects on Android tablet devices. Developments in digitisation of educational content: – Last month, we reported that all CBSE textbooks and other learning material would be made available online by NCERT, which had already made some books available online through its mobile app and e-books, and would look to add CBSE books, videos and other learning material. – The HRD ministry said that the first phase of its National Digital Library would be complete by February 2016, starting with 1 million digitized books and journals from 100 institutes. DeitY had announced the program back in August 2010. – In November, the University Grants Commission (UGC) said it would launch Bharatvani , with the objective of delivering content in all Indian languages through the online portal. – In the same month, S Chand, the publisher of textbooks and competitive exam material, raised $27 million for scaling up operations in education publishing, digital education and augmenting textbooks with multimedia and digital content. – In August, the Oxford University Press (OUP) launched its online English learning and assessment product called Oxford Achievers targeted at school children in Class I-VIII in Hyderabad. – In November 2014, Yashwantrao Chavan Maharashtra Open University (YCMOU) was digitizing its curriculum books and making it available online to students, stating that the initial plan was to offer around 350 books online.
