Samson Q9U Dynamic Broadcast Microphone Review

Mar 27, 2021

In the old days, my laptop’s integrated microphone used to be sufficient for the few times I needed voice input. That basically amounted to a once in a blue moon FaceTime call. However, over the past six years, the standby integrated mic has proven to be horribly inadequate. If you are using your computer for any kind of creative activity that requires vocal input — podcasting and streaming being the popular things these days — you need an external microphone. Over the past year, you’ve probably found that some participants sound way better on Zoom. Nine times out of 10, they are also using an external microphone. The Samson Q9U Dynamic Broadcast Microphone may be overkill for Zoom calls (although you’ll sound fantastic), but it’s aimed directly at creatives. Kudos for including multiple USB cables and a foam wind screen in the box, but you'll need to pick ... [+] up a stand. Brad Moon No Software Required One of the big strengths of the Samson Q9U mic is that it is plug-and-play, with no drivers required. In fact, it needs no additional software at all (other than your recording app). Other USB mics capture sound, but require software on your computer to do any processing or modification to optimize the audio. That can be fun, it gives you more control over results, but it can also be time-consuming. The bottom of the Samson Q9U showing USB-C, XLR, and headphone outputs, plus Low Cut Filter and Mid ... [+] Presence Boost switches. Mute button is on the side for easy access. Brad Moon The Q9U instead puts two key controls right on the microphone itself. There’s a Low Cut Filter switch. If audio sounds a little too muddy or bass-heavy, engaging this switch will cut low frequencies by 3dB at 200Hz. There is also a Mid Presence Boost switch. Activate it and the midrange gets a boost — a feature that is especially useful with vocal input. There’s nothing to stop you from using third party software to modify the audio, but this mic gives you the option of true plug-and-play functionality. You can adjust two key variables right on the microphone itself at the flip of a switch. MORE FOR YOU But You Will Need a Stand This microphone is mounted on a threaded, swivel-style yolk mount. It’s a standard thread for mic accessories, but there is no stand included in the box. You’ll need a desk stand or a boom to actually use the mic. Samson sent along its own MD5 mic stand for review purposes. This is a heavy, round, die-cast metal base with a 5-inch height. It goes for around $16, so we’re not talking a large extra cost. But other USB mics in this price range do tend to include an integrated stand. Samson's MD5 is a simple, effective, and inexpensive mic base option. Brad Moon Hands on With the Samson Q9U I don’t pretend to be an expert on the technical intricacies of microphone technology. I’m also no sound engineer. This one is equipped with a “dynamic capsule microphone with humbucking coil and neodymium magnet” and uses a cardoid polar panel. All this seems to boil down to being able to use USB for power, reducing electromagnetic interference and equipment hum, eliminating the need for a shock-mount, operation that’s optimized for picking up vocals aimed right at the center of the microphone, and high quality audio capture. Here’s what I found while using the Samson Q9U for recording video voiceovers. First, I was able to plug the mic directly into my MacBook Pro using USB-C. Things are already looking up, because every other mic in my collection is still using micro USB. The combination of the mic and the stand resulted in the perfect height for use while sitting at my desk. Not having to deal with any software simplified my recording process significantly. The first few tries, I found my voice sounded a little bright. Flipping the Mid Presence Boost switch immediately addressed that. Much more warmth. The integrated windscreen did a good job with “p-pops” but with the included foam windscreen installed, they were eliminated. That saved me time, with fewer re-takes required. With the foam windscreen on, the Q9U looks the part of a professional microphone. Brad Moon My office is far from a recording studio setup, so even with the door and windows closed, there can still be background noise — dogs walking past the office, cars driving past the house, my wife on a Zoom meeting downstairs, or the kids watching a movie in the rec room. The Q9U picked up my voice perfectly, but none of that background noise made it in the mix. I liked the warmth, clarity, and detail in the vocal recordings straight from the Samson Q9U better than any other microphone I’ve previously used. The fact that I achieved the results I did without having to mess around with software made it even better. Samson Q9U Key Specs: Cardioid polar pattern XLR analog output
