DSC was founded in 1960 on Chicago’s South Side as Dry Storage Corporation. Chicago-area firm says incident brought minimal disruption

DSC Logistics, a third-party logistics provider and supply chain management firm near Chicago, was targeted in a ransomware attack, the company told FreightWaves. DSC, which is owned by South Korean supply chain management conglomerate CJ Logistics,  disclosed the cyberattack after a ransomware gang threatened to expose stolen data on a leak site. The firm specializes in consumer packaged goods and food logistics and helps large corporations manage internal supply chains. “Fortunately, as a result of our security practices and response measures, we were able to continue business operations and experienced minimal disruption,” DSC said in a statement on Wednesday. DSC said it was investigating the incident with help from outside specialists. It declined to comment on whether any data was stolen. The appearance of the company’s name on the leak site of ransomware group Egregor suggests it refused to pay a ransom demand. The cyberattack adds to a growing list of victims among U.S. transportation and logistics firms targeted in a ransomware attack, including Forward Air and OmniTRAX. But this week also brought encouraging news in the fight against ransomware attacks. On Wednesday, the U.S. Department of Justice announced an international law enforcement action aimed at Netwalker, a ransomware gang that brought havoc on the Australia-based transportation and logistics company Toll Group in 2020. Authorities took down Netwalker’s leak site and brought charges against a Canadian man,  Sebastien Vachon-Desjardins, accused of extorting companies out of $14 million. Criminal charges are extraordinarily rare in ransomware attacks. A consortium of global law enforcement agencies including the FBI also took down a massive cyber threat, Emotet , whose malware has infected more than a million devices worldwide. Still more than a dozen ransomware gangs remain active, and a threat to transporttion and logistics providers. DSC said it was taking the recent attack to heart. “As we are increasingly aware, malicious cyber activity is on the rise,” DSC said. “While no company ever wants to encounter an event of this kind, the experience has further sharpened our vision for cybersecurity education and innovation. We are focused on providing leadership in this area.”

Ransomware attack targets major US logistics firm DSC

CJ Group launched CJ Logistics America, Tuesday, a joint corporation consolidating two of its corporate bodies in America and Canada and merging it with DSC Logistics, which the company acquired in 2018. This is a rare move for a Korean company to combine an acquired American business with a local subsidiary. It is seen as an example of the strong determination of CJ Group Chairman Lee Jay-hyun, who hopes to lead in logistics not only in Asia but also the world. The joint corporation will unify the manpower, logistics infrastructure and platforms owned by the three former subsidiaries across the United States and Canada. There are a total of 280 square kilometers of warehouse space there along with 70 facilities established for shipping. CJ Logistics Canada will operate under CJ Logistics America as a subsidiary. The CJ Logistics' branches in America and Canada had only been targeting Korean companies there as customers, but the new joint corporation will expand to target global firms. It will also upgrade its logistics service, which originally focused on the United States. Now, it plans to expand the service all over North America
In the near future, CJ Logistics will utilize its global network to expand its business in the South American region. Currently, it has a logistics network of 154 cities in 40 countries. Through the joint corporation launch, we hope to provide the best logistics services in the world," said Chief Customer Officer of DSC Logistics Kevin Coleman. Since Lee chose America as a base to grow CJ Group into a more global company, the chairman has frequently emphasized the importance of the American market. He acquired two American firms between 2018 and 2019. CJ spent $28.56 million to acquire DSC Logistics and $1.84 billion to purchase Schwan's Company, which mainly transports frozen food. The retail insider said CJ will soon combine its food companies in the United States as well. Lee's ultimate goal is to bring together the logistics company and food firms to provide a combined service in America, which the chairman believes will naturally make CJ a global leader in the sector.

The company will be doing business as (dba) DSC Logistics in the US through 2020, with plans to rebrand as CJ Logistics starting in 2021. DSC Logistics and CJ Logistics combine as one operating company, CJ Logistics America, to integrate customer solutions and expand the company’s North American platform.
