Hexagon is updating ESPRIT CAM

Dec 7, 2021

December 7, 2021 CAM software, introduced by the company’s Manufacturing Intelligence division Hexagon , provides the digital tools needed to prepare 3D printed components for production using powder bed fusion (PBF) technology. Because hybrid manufacturing involves performing both additive and subtractive processes, integrating assembly preparation tools into CAM software streamlines part-by-part workflows and offers significant efficiency improvements while increasing additive manufacturing volumes. Today, PBF is the most advanced additive manufacturing technology for industrial production and represents 86% of the world’s machine installation base. PBF technology is used to produce 3D parts by heating successive layers of powder, usually at the micron level, and generally produces parts that require finishing work on conventional CNC machine tools to achieve a high quality finish. Hexagon’s ESPRIT CAM software now offers a position preparation workflow in a CAM environment that provides a single, simplified platform for both add-on and finishing operations. Its patented Part-to-Build workflow has been developed to change the prevailing 3D printing paradigm from rapid prototyping to industrial production using a true CAM environment that includes site preparation steps and programming tools for post-processing of wire EDMs (EDM). ) and milling tools. In series production, a given part is produced a hundred times with the same setting plates, orientation, support structure generation and exposure strategy assignment. The Part-to-Build workflow solves part preparation and job preparation with specialized functions within a single software, making production smarter by increasing volume efficiency and automating repetitive tasks such as slicing. Construction preparation in the ESPRIT CAM system is intended for CAM programmers and uses a work procedure based on parametric data, which ensures high accuracy and compliance with the geometry of the original CAD model until it is cut in preparation for 3D printing. The software reads and manipulates all popular parametric CAD formats and automatically identifies those surfaces that require support. The software also helps create support structures and generates parametric areas with teeth, fragmentation and perforations. Support generation can be automated for future assemblies by assigning presets to a surface area, capturing valuable manufacturing know-how and increasing future productivity. Because most models for 3D printed parts are based on STL, ESPRIT CAM also provides an STL (mesh) slicer that uses a built-in software core. Once the part is cut, it can be imported into the job preparation software environment and reused if necessary. Here, the exposure strategies are automatically assigned according to the selected machine settings. Because the part is already cut, the programmer only has to assemble it and the corresponding machine file is generated based on the target machine settings. Hexagon works closely with machine builders to provide manufacturer-certified machine kits for optimum performance and reliability, and works with the world’s leading additive research institutes to continually apply the latest cutting-edge technologies. By using ESPRIT Additive PBF in conjunction with other Hexagon products, such as MSC Apex Generative Design and Simufact Additive, customers can further optimize their parts designs for additive manufacturing.
