Chinese AI platform DMAI nets $77m in Series A round

Jan 28, 2021

AI January 28, 2021 Southeast China’s Guangzhou-headquartered cognitive AI platform DMAI has raked in 500 million yuan ($77 million) in its Series A round of financing co-led by existing investor Sailing Capital Management. Information technology-focused GF Venture Capital co-led the round, according to a company statement on Thursday. The current round was also joined by existing investor Jiangmen Ventures and new investors Lenovo Capital, Guangzhou City Construction Investment Group’s S Fund and Flower City Ventures. In 2019, Sailing Capital along with Jiangmen Ventures, IDG Capital, CDH Investments and intelligent driven investment firm ECC Capital had collectively invested ‘tens of millions of US dollars’ in DMAI’s pre-A round. From the latest round, DMAI will invest a part of the proceeds towards R&D of new generation cognitive AI. The platform, set up by AI specialist Dr Songchun Zhu, leverages novel technologies to maximize the man-machine interface. Its target focus areas include edtech, new retail, and pan-entertainment. “Cognitive AI in terms of man-machine interaction and personalised service will benefit the transformation of education and other vertical fields,” said Songchun Zhu in the statement. Sailing Capital is a joint PE fund co-launched in 2011 by state-backed Shanghai International Group, SAIC Motor, Bright Food (Group) and Huabao Investment. Back in 2018, Sailing closed its second RMB-denominated fund at about $1.5 billion with a focus on consumer, healthcare and technology startups.
