Tech M&A: Google spices up Firebase with Divshot; Zendesk and Rapid7 make data tech buys

Oct 14, 2015

The Dell-EMC deal is still the merger everyone is talking about in tech this week, but there is M&A activity abound elsewhere. see also Read More Google made a quiet acquisition for one of its subsidiaries this week, nabbing front-end web hosting service Divshot. Confirmed by the Divshot team on Tuesday, the Santa Monica, Calif.-based startup will be fully integrated with mobile app backend platform Firebase , which Google Cloud Platform picked up in 2014 . Divshot will shut down all of its standalone ervices on December 14. Existing customers have been provided instructions if they want to move over to Firebase hosting. Financial terms of the deal have not been disclosed. But there are a few others disclosing financial details -- both of which are buying up smaller data analytics companies to bolster existing platforms. Zendesk is potentially extending its reach across the pond after buying up We Are Cloud SAS, the French company behind BIME Analytics. Founded in 2009, We Are Cloud has been pitching BIME as a cloud-based data analytics platform designed for customer service and engagement. The platform has since grown to serve customers across 35 countries. Zendesk now counts more than 60,000 paid customer accounts in 150 countries. Zendesk has agreed to pay $45 million in cash for 100 percent of the outstanding shares of We Are Cloud. Zendesk also touted all employees at We Are Cloud are being offered continued employment at the customer service software company. The San Francisco-based public company plans to install BIME Analytics as the backbone behind its own customer data platform with the goal of infusing data analytics throughout its portfolio. In contrast to the Divshot-Firebase deal, BIME products will still be available, sold and supported as standalone offerings. Also making a play for better data analytics tech is Rapid7, which specializes in cyber security data and analytics solutions. Looking to scale up in handling machine data especially, Rapid7 bought Logentries, a Software-as-a-Service provider for machine data search, log management and intelligence tech. Founded in 2010, Logentries has grown to serve more than 3,000 customers across in over 65 countries across multiple industries. Rapid7 itself already counts more than 4,150 organizations across 90 countries -- including 34 percent of the Fortune 1000 -- as customers. Rapid7 explained in a press release that the Logentries buy will complement its existing detection and response tactics while adding compliance, management and forensics capabilities. Both headquartered in Boston, Rapid7 has agree to the sum of $68 million, dividing up to approximately $36 million in cash and $32 million in Rapid7 equity. Like Zendesk, Rapid7 also looks keen to keep Logentries employees onboard. The security brand said it granted 910,812 shares of restricted common stock to 39 individuals who became employees of Rapid7 or one of its subsidiaries upon the closing of the acquisition.
