Recently a heated debate broke out on LinkedIn on whether it is "right" for print customers who received help with concept and file creation from a printer before the job was awarded, to print the job with someone else. Were they stealing the idea that was offered as help? The debate was sparked by a post from Evelio Mattos , Founder of Package Design Unboxd . He showed a packaging concept for a book series developed many years ago that had been making the rounds as a new prototype developed by another company. The conversation moved to design ownership and I tagged Ethan Goller President of Structural Graphics, to share his experience and explain more about design patents – of which he holds many. The topic was worth exploring more. In this Podcast from The Printerverse , Evelio Mattos, Ethan Goller and I discuss who "owns" an idea, and the process for protecting concepts, prototypes, and production templates – if you even can. Listen Long and Prosper!
