St. Louis startup lets adults ‘Dabble’ in new hobbies

Jul 2, 2014

Jul 2, 2014, 9:55am CDT Updated: Jul 2, 2014, 9:57am CDT St. Louis startup lets adults ‘Dabble’ in new hobbies Email  |  Twitter  |  Facebook A startup that has found initial success in markets such as Chicago, Denver and Austin is moving to St. Louis thanks to a $50,000 non-equity grant from Arch Grants . The company is called Dabble. It’s a platform that gives users a way to teach or take specialty classes on a wide range of subjects. In Chicago, for instance, users can take classes in jewelry making, whiskey tasting or learning a new language. Most classes cost between $20 to $150. And users, if they have an expertise, can also volunteer to host a class. The platform recently launched in St. Louis ; currently there is just one class available, Scotch 101, which costs $30. The company does bring in revenue, though Dabble co-founder Erin Hopmann , a St. Louis native, declined to disclose the figure. “We take a cut of every ticket sold,” she said. According to AngelList , the company has raised more than $450,000 in seed capital. Dabble is in more than 60 markets, including several international cities such as London, Vancouver and Amsterdam. Hopmann recently sat down with the St. Louis Business Journal to discuss the future of Dabble here. When and why did you create Dabble? We launched Dabble in May 2011 in Chicago, so we just hit our three-year mark. We created Dabble to solve a personal pain point that both my co-founder, Jess, and I had: As adults, it was difficult to find classes to simply try out our interests. Just because we had full-time jobs didn’t mean we didn’t still want to learn. But yet, every time we sought to explore our interests — whether it was gardening or printmaking or beer brewing — the commitment of time and money was often too much to justify. So we asked ourselves: Why isn’t there a platform for people to post and take one-time, affordable classes? And thus, Dabble was born. The average class is just one time at a price point of $30, and anyone with expertise is invited to teach. Dabble has become an open community for learning and teaching, connecting people in the community in real time. Page 1
