CuMedica is a privately held company founded by Dr Christopher Underwood. It has developed a new biomaterials technology in collaboration with the US company Greene Tweed & Co Inc.The base materials employed are the class of polymers known as perfluoroelastomers. These materials have been used in state-of-the-art sealing applications in the aerospace and semiconductor industries for some years, principally because of their immunity to degradation in highly aggressive environments. These materials are inert and non-toxic but have not previously been used for any medical implant applications.CuMedica has applied unique fabrication techniques to the base materials which independent review confirms make them ideally suited to a wide variety of medical implant applications. For example, cardiovascular implants, soft tissue implants, barrier coating for stents, endovascular applications, orthopaedic applications, artificial corneas, and scaffold matrices (for use in tissue engineering applications). The business model is to act as a technology licensing company, granting licenses to use the base materials as modified to major corporations for the sort of applications highlighted above.
