Former RM Williams boss to run Country Road Group

Apr 29, 2021

Share South African retailer Woolworths Holdings has appointed the former head of RM Williams, Raju Vuppalapati, as chief executive of the Country Road Group, which includes Country Road, Witchery and Mimco. Mr Vuppalapati takes the helm almost six months after Country Road Group’s former CEO, Scott Fyfe, was appointed CEO of David Jones last October. He joins Country Road Group after almost seven years running RM Williams, which was sold to Andrew Forrest’s private investment company , Tattarang, last October for $190 million. After seven years at RM Williams, Raju Vuppalapati will take the helm at Country Road Group. During this time, Mr Vuppalapati led the turnaround of the business by repositioning the brand, expanding global distribution and building an online offering. Before joining RM Williams, Mr Vuppalapati worked at Levi Strauss & Co, where his career briefly overlapped with that of Woolworths Holdings CEO Roy Bagattini. Related Quotes Advertisement Mr Vuppalapati held various regional management roles at Levi Strauss in brand and consumer marketing, sales and operations, living and working in India, Japan and Singapore. His last role at Levi’s was that of regional managing director, where he was responsible for the Australian, New Zealand, African and Middle East markets, based out of Cape Town. “Raju’s extensive industry experience and exemplary track record in building teams and driving performance across diverse markets position him well to lead [Country Road Group] and its portfolio of iconic brands,” said Mr Bagattini. “He is going to be a great addition to our team, and I look forward to his contribution and leadership at this exciting time for Country Road Group.” Mr Vuppalapati will move from Sydney to Melbourne to take up his new role. “I am delighted to be joining Country Road Group and to be working with a portfolio of some of Australia’s most iconic and most loved clothing and lifestyle brands,” he said. “It is a great business, and I am looking forward to working closely with the talented CRG team. This is an incredibly dynamic time in retail and I am excited by the opportunities ahead.” After a tough year in 2020, Country Road Group returned to profit growth in the December-half, after receiving about $25 million in JobKeeper subsidies, with adjusted operating profits rising 44.6 per cent to $94 million. Sales at CRG’s Country Road, Trenery, Mimco and Politix chains fell by 5.2 per cent over the half year (down 2.4 per cent on a same-store basis), dragged down by store closures in Melbourne and in airports. But sales in the last six weeks of the period rose 6.7 per cent, underpinned by new products. Excluding the Victorian stores, CRG sales grew 8.2 per cent and online sales by 52.5 per cent.
