More than 50 percent of companies will use container technology by 2020, up from less than 20 percent in 2017, according to Gartner . Software containers allow DevOps teams and service providers to rapidly roll out applications in a consistent way — essentially packing up code, runtime, system tools, system libraries and settings for deployment across enterprise servers or multiple clouds. The challenge? Companies and service providers need to monitor and manage all those containers. Eager to address that need, New Relic recently acquired  CoScale , a Belgian company with container and microservices monitoring expertise, with a special focus on Kubernetes . Key CoScale team members are relocating to New Relic’s  European Development Center in Barcelona, Spain . New Relic already offers a range of mobile, web, cloud infrastructure and application performance monitoring (APM) capabilities. The company can also monitor such platforms as  Google Kubernetes Engine (GKE ),  Amazon Elastic Container Service for Kubernetes (EKS ),  Microsoft Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS) , and  RedHat Openshift . Armed with CoScale, New Relic will expand those Kubernetes workload monitoring capabilities. MSPs, SMBs and Software Containers
Generally speaking, the container adoption wave mostly involves enterprise customers, software companies and developers. The container trend isn’t as prevalent in small businesses, typically because SMBs rely on commercial SaaS applications rather than building and deploying applications on their own. Déjà spécialisé dans le monitoring d'environnement d'orchestrateurs de containers Kubernetes (GKE, EKS, AKS et RedHat Openshift), la société américaine a annoncé le rachat de la start-up belge CoScale. « CoScale est un chef de file en matière de monitoring de conteneurs pour Docker, Kubernetes et OpenShift, offrant une visibilité complète des conteneurs dans les environnements de production », a indiqué CoScale dans un communiqué. « Nous nous attendons à ce que la technologie permette à New Relic de servir les équipes DevOps cherchant à déployer des conteneurs, et d'accélérer notre feuille de route en construisant un produit de contrôle des conteneurs et Kubernetes plus solide ». A l'occasion de cette acquisition, dont les termes financiers n'ont pas été précisés, les équipes de CoScale (près d'une quinzaine de personnes) rejoindront celles de New Relic dans son centre de recherche de Barcelone en Espagne. Depuis sa création en 2008, New Relic a levé près de 215 millions de dollars.

Software analytics leader New Relic Inc. has acquired a Belgian startup called CoScale NV , which sells software for monitoring software container environments with a specific focus on Kubernetes. New Relic sells a digital intelligence platform that lets developers, operations, and tech teams measure and monitor the performance of their applications and infrastructure. It said the acquisition of CoScale, terms of which weren’t revealed, is intended to help accelerate its product roadmap and boost its strategy of supporting container and microservices-based architectures. The plan is to incorporate CoScale’s capabilities into its New Relic Infrastructure platform in order to build a stronger container and Kubernetes monitoring product. “We are thrilled to bring CoScale’s knowledge and deeply technical team into the New Relic fold,” Ramon Guiu, senior director of product management at New Relic, wrote in a blog post. “The CoScale team members joining New Relic will focus on incorporating CoScale’s capabilities and experience into continuing innovations for the New Relic platform.”
The acquisition serves to illustrate how New Relic has transformed itself in recent years to cater to an increasingly diverse world of application development. Back in the days when New Relic first emerged, application monitoring was fairly simple as most were hosted in customer’s data centers. But in recent years the landscape has changed dramatically, and most apps are much more complex, tapping into data stored across a multitude of devices and cloud platforms. As part of this trend, developers are increasingly using software containers to build their apps, as they enable software to be built just once and run on any computer platform. Kubernetes is the most widely used orchestration tool to help manage large deployments of software containers. New Relic already offers a bunch of container and microservices monitoring tools, and supports Kubernetes as well as Google Kubernetes Engine, Amazon Elastic Container Service for Kubernetes, Microsoft Azure Kubernetes Service and RedHat OpenShift. By acquiring CoScale it will be able to add Docker to that list, and also offer new services to the DevOps community, the company said. Analyst Holger Mueller of Constellation Research Inc. said that given the small size of CoScale’s team, the acquisition looks like an “acquihire” designed to snatch up its talent, namely its two cofounders Stijn Polfliet and Fred Ryckbosch. “Kubernetes has clearly won the container wars for now, and that means all players need to increase capabilities and know-how in the domain,” Mueller said. “This should strengthen New Relic’s capabilities. It will be interesting to see how CoScale’s know-how fits into New Relic’s roadmap.”

New Relic , a provider of analytics and monitoring around a company’s internal and external facing apps and services to help optimise their performance, is making an acquisition today as it continues to expand a newer area of its business, containers and microservices. The company has announced that it has purchased CoScale , a provider of monitoring for containers and microservices, with a specific focus on Kubernetes. Terms of the deal — which will include the team and technology — are not being disclosed, as it will not have a material impact on New Relic’s earnings. The larger company is traded on the NYSE (ticker: NEWR) and has been a strong upswing in the last two years, and its current market cap its around $4.6 billion. Originally founded in Belgium, CoScale had raised $6.4 million and was last valued at $7.9 million, according to PitchBook . Investors included Microsoft (via its ScaleUp accelerator), PMV and the Qbic Fund, two Belgian investors. “We are thrilled to bring CoScale’s knowledge and deeply technical team into the New Relic fold,” noted Ramon Guiu, senior director of product management at New Relic. “The CoScale team members joining New Relic will focus on incorporating CoScale’s capabilities and experience into continuing innovations for the New Relic platform.”

It is based in Bethesda, Maryland. On July 8th, 2021, BoxBoat Technologies was acquired by IBM. The terms of the transaction were not disclosed.
