Plant might get new owners Alpha was formerly Fry Metals and Cookson Electronics July 31, 2015 Save | A local plant making solder products might soon be under new ownership. Alpha at 4100 Sixth Ave. currently employs 120, and officials said it is unknown if the sale to Platform Specialty Products Corp. will affect the number of workers locally. The Altoona plant, which formerly operated under the Fry Metals and Cookson Electronics names, is owned by United Kingdom-based Alent plc. Earlier this month, it was announced that West Palm Beach, Fla.-based Platform Specialty made a $2.1 billion offer to buy Alent in a cash and stock transaction. Including net debt, the total transaction value is about $2.3 billion. According to a joint press release, Alent is a global supplier of specialty chemicals and engineered materials used primarily in electronics, automotive and industrial applications. Its business segments are Enthone, which supplies electroplating chemistry, and Alpha, which makes interconnect materials, such as solder, primarily for electronics. In 2012, the Alpha Altoona plant was named to the Blair County Business Hall of Fame. The more than 200,000-square-foot facility is more than 100 years old and was once the South Altoona Foundry for the Pennsylvania Railroad. Both companies' boards of directors unanimously support the transaction, which is expected to close in late 2015 or early 2016. Following closing of the transaction, Platform will remain a New York Stock Exchange listed company domiciled in the United States, according to the press release. Alent officials said it is too early to determine if there will be any job cuts at the Altoona plant. "It is too early to discuss whether there will be any job losses. The transaction is not due to close until the end of 2015 and at that stage that will be a question for the new owners of the business. In the meantime, the welfare of our employees remains our number one priority and it is very much business as normal," Charles Armitstead, Alent spokesman, said. "Alent is a strong complement to Platform's founding asset MacDermid, and I am excited to see it become a part of the Platform family. We have a long history with Alent and its predecessor company, and these are assets we know well," said Platform CEO Daniel H. Leever in a statement. "Alent's Enthone division represents a perfect partner as we continue to grow and build MacDermid whilst Alent's Alpha division adds several new high return positions to our portfolio. "
