A total of 75 students from 12 North East schools took part in this year's CodeWars at Hewlett Packard Enterprise's North Tyneside site
A total of 75 students from 12 schools from across the region met at Hewlett Packard Enterprise’s North Shields site to battle it out in a coding competition designed to boost their IT skills and inspire them to consider careers in technology. Competing in 28 teams, the young people, in years nine to 13, were presented with a set of 23 increasingly difficult problems, which they were challenged to solve using their coding knowledge. After several hours of intense concentration, St Mary’s School in Newcastle was crowned the CodeWars 2016 winner, with Heaton Manor in second place and TyneMet College in third. An additional award was also created for Biddick Academy in Sunderland, which was praised for its innovative solution to a challenge that involved rendering a shape on the screen. Originally launched 16 years ago in HP’s Houston Campus, CodeWars has been a hit in the US, where it has grown significantly. In the past few years, the initiative has been held across the globe, with locations including Taiwan and India. In 2015, then, it came to Europe for the first time, when the Cobalt Business Park site launched its inaugural competition. On Saturday, as the North East students competed, similar events where held in seven other locations, including the US and Barcelona. Lindsay Phillips, Hewlett Packard Enterprise’s Newcastle Delivery Centre director, said: “Everything went really well. The buzz in our offices on Saturday morning was amazing. “We managed to create a really positive, powerful atmosphere and it was hugely inspiring to see my staff and the teachers from each of the schools come in to support the event.”
Mr Phillips added that, while there was still some way to go, school curriculum's now offered students an introduction to coding. CodeWars, however, was about encouraging the young people to think on their feet, applying theoretical knowledge to real life scenarios, some of which may have applicability within the business world. “It also gave the young people the opportunity to come and visit our offices, see what they are like inside and get a little bit of understanding of the relevance of what they are doing in school and through code clubs,” he said. “It shows the connection to the high quality jobs we are providing in the region and provides a platform for us to shout loud and strong about the tech industry in the North East. “One thing we see going forward is that the number of roles in the tech industry is going to keep increasing and the complexity of technology is continuing to evolve and develop; we’re now using technology that five years ago we couldn’t have imagined. “Having the right skills coming through the education system is absolutely critical. My ambition is for us to do the best we can in terms of using those skills to develop solutions for our customers.”
Hewlett Packard Enterprise is an American multinational technology enterprise company. It employs around 2,000 people in the North East, where it has hired roughly 250 graduates in the past four years. Since 2014, the company has also taken on around 100 apprentices in the region. Tynemouth MP Alan Campbell, who presented the prizes at Saturday’s event, said: “Congratulations to all the schools that took part in CodeWars and a special congratulations to this years’ winners. “This event is a demonstration of the fantastic local talent here in the North East. “It’s great to see CodeWars return to Newcastle for a second year and great to see the continued enthusiasm and interest from the schools. “CodeWars is an excellent example of the impact and investment local employers, such as HPE, are contributing to the North East.”
