Building the best app on Slack How Clerk won Slack’s first-ever…

Clerk’s seven-day journey Here at Clerk , our vision is to make any business textable through Slack. So when Slack held its first virtual hackathon in March, we set out to develop a series of new features for our users, such as: Accessing our app on mobile Sending group text messages Importing contacts Slack is a channel-based messaging platform where many of our new and existing users spend most of their time doing their best work — which is why it’s important that our app fits seamlessly within the existing Slack user experience. This was our guiding mantra throughout the hackathon, as we set out to build with the latest platform features: granular permissions , app home and modals . And, it certainly paid off! We successfully launched each new feature and took home a win for best modernized custom app at the hackathon. Clerk enables SMS for Slack users. Consolidating SMS in Slack At Clerk, we view communication as a team effort. We strongly believe software-as-a-service, but still don’t want to rely on other third-party apps to replicate the core functionality of Slack and what we love most — elegant, consolidated team communication. That’s why we launched Clerk, a native SMS app built on top of Slack, so small and medium-sized businesses can respond to their clients faster. Most businesses recognize that customers don’t want to commit to the formality of a phone call or email, so SMS is a lightweight alternative. As a platform, Slack offers the convenience of hosting all communication in one harmonious place — no added software, log-ins, lost passwords or user IDs. Hundreds of customers now use Clerk in Slack for sales, customer support, and more. Centralizing the Clerk experience on Slack Our customers do their most essential work in Slack, so they’re constantly pushing us to innovate and deliver them a better service through the Slack interface. Most of our customers requested a centralized place to access Clerk without leaving Slack. Now, by clicking on the name of our app in the Slack sidebar, our new app home tab is where users can access an overview of their unique work with Clerk — kind of like a command center. Testing with users In the spirit of design sprints, we tested a few hypotheses around user onboarding. The previous experience was clunky and not user-friendly. The /invite command was not intuitive to our user base. First, users needed to get comfortable engaging with our app through a slash command. Then, they’d tell our app to send to a specific phone number. The sequence was confusing for our users, since DMing an app is not intuitive. Users were prompted to literally type that they want a message sent to a specific phone number. So, we challenged ourselves to rebuild the onboarding experience. Our goal was to instantly allow users to text a number upon app installation. To achieve this, we implemented interactive buttons in our app’s home tab . This experience is much cleaner and simpler — especially with buttons as intuitive prompts for users. Next, we built modals , pop-up windows in Slack — so a friendly interface appears and clearly prompts users to type out their text message without leaving Slack. Modals are ideal for our users, since they emulate the mobile experience. Modals also came in handy for building a seamless, step-by-step onboarding experience for our app users — as opposed to a fragmented feature discovery process. Clerk integrates with best-of-breed CRMs, so group SMS is easy. Hitting a snag By mid-week, we realized that sending a text message wasn’t enough for our users. We wanted to add more value, on top of the existing Slack experience. So, we built a contact importing feature in our app’s home tab. Given the time constraints of the hackathon, we set aside our rigorous standards and made a few tradeoffs to ship this feature on time — and to many of our users’ delight. Clerk’s business development officer suggested that users could upload contacts through a CSV in Typeform. The results are in During the hackathon, we shipped three new features, created an entirely new process for shipping app design, and shortened the user time-to-value by migrating app experience to the home tab. As a result, conversion increased by 30% and average conversion time decreased significantly in the weeks following the hackathon — confirming that we are on the right track.
