September 13, 2023 Viktor Axelsen is surprisingly out of the Hong Kong Open badminton tournament after just one match. Three days after he won the China Open and thereby took one of the biggest victories of his career, the 29-year-old from Fynbo came down emphatically. The unnoticed Taiwanese Lee Chia Hao, who is only number 37 in the world rankings, clearly beat the Danish world number seven in two sets with the figures 21-16 and 21-10. Everything else seemed to go according to plan, as Axelsen led 11-9 and 12-10 in the first set. But then the Taiwanese won five balls in a row and took control of the set, which he then decided 21-16 on his first set point. In the second set, things went completely wrong for Axelsen, who only followed to 5-5. Especially after the midway break at the score 7-11, the Dane lost the thread and won only three more duels in the match. Axelsen thus became the only one of four Danish men’s singles players who had to die in the first round. The other three, Magnus Johannesen, Anders Antonsen and Rasmus Gemke are all through and will be on the field again on Thursday. The Hong Kong Open is a Super 500 tournament, which corresponds to the fourth level on the World Tour.
