Hilary Duff And Her ‘How I Met Your Father’ Cast & Creators Discuss Bringing The New Comedy Series To Hulu

Jan 18, 2022

Hulu Even with many Hilary Duff fans heartbroken over the current fate of the Lizzie McGuire reboot on Disney Plus, her new How I Met Your Father series streaming today on Hulu is exactly what dreams are made of, as it will effectively fill any missing “Hilary void” you might be having. Duff not only stars on this separate sequel series to How I Met Your Mother (2005-2014), but she is also a producer on the project. So, I asked this beloved television leader what was most important to her behind the scenes in helping form this series. “This is my first time producing and I took it really seriously,” Duff reveals to me at Forbes. “I have been on multiple TV shows now - this is the first true lead I’ve had since I guess Lizzie McGuire on TV you know because [on] Younger, I was a supporting character. I felt like I have enough experience that I really knew - I know how a lot of this stuff works and I’m working with some of the best in the business. I was honored to be able to have a seat at the table, but also to actually include my input, you know? I was heavily involved in the casting, I was heavily involved in creating the style wardrobe side of things for the look of the show.” She goes on to say, “Then just being an actor and meeting these amazing people that are stepping into these really funny roles and saying like Hey, I’m here. We all have to show up. We are all equals. If you have any kind of issue or problem, like speak up. I’m going to be speaking up on behalf for all of us, because there’s things that you run into when someone feels uncomfortable over here or this thing happens. I’ve been through that so many times. I am a nurturing person and feel like people can come to me and everyone is going to feel comfortable at this job. And then you know, above me, Isaac and Elizabeth are just incredible role models for me to witness the operation and learn from that.” How I Met Your Father — “FOMO” - Episode 102 — Determined to try and live in the moment, Sophie and ... (Photo by: Patrick Wymore/Hulu) Hulu Isaac Aptaker and Elizabeth Berger continue with their track record of making impactful television (This Is Us and Love, Victor) to now How I Met Your Father as its showrunners, writers, and executive producers. So, how did their idea for this new series ultimately become a reality? “This is one that’s actually been on the back burner for quite awhile,” Aptaker continues. “We wrote the pilot for this before This Is Us and then just as we were literally typing the end on the script, This Is Us premiered and exploded and Dan Fogelman, the creator of that show, asked us to step up and co-run it with him. So, we kind of put all of our other projects on ice for a moment and it really wasn’t until this past year when This Is Us entered into its final season that we started to think Well, what do we want to do next? And we remembered this script that truly no one had ever seen. Serendipitously, Hilary Duff was coming up for air after seven years on Younger and looking for her next projects, so we kind of got set up with her on a blind date of sorts. We mentioned this, she loved the idea, she said Let me read it tonight. We assumed that means I’ll never read it - we’ll never talk again but Hilary is unlike most people. She literally read it that night and the next day, we got a phone call that she wanted to be our Sophie.” Berger goes on to share the value Duff brings to this How I Met Your Father series, not just in front of the camera but also with her creative input behind the scenes. “She is such a pro. She has been doing this for so long and she’s just a great partner. She loves the show, she loves the stories we’re telling, she has great insights about her character. She keeps us honest about hair & makeup and I value her opinion above almost all others. She just has great instincts and she’s incredibly smart. She was involved as we navigated our insane casting process on Zoom. She has really been a tremendous partner and a joy to work with.” How I Met Your Father — “Pilot” - Episode 101 — After a slew of let-down Tinder dates, Sophie meets ... An Uber-related phone mishap leads them to an eclectic new group of friends. Jesse (Chris Lowell) and Sophie (Hilary Duff), shown. (Photo by: Patrick Wymore/Hulu) Hulu Similar to the format of How I Met Your Mother, the new How I Met Your Father series follows Sophie (played by Duff) as she navigates through life, love, and friendship in New York City as she enters into her 30s. And as the late Bob Saget narrated the former series as the older version of Josh Radnor’s character Ted, Kim Cattrall is a pleasant addition to this new cast, playing the 2050 version of Duff’s 2022 Sophie as she decides to tell her son the story of how she met his father, with no intention of leaving out “the sexy bits.” Duff leads this ensemble cast of diverse and talented co-stars Chris Lowell , Francia Raisa , Tien Tran , Tom Ainsley , and Suraj Sharma . The sharp banter and skilled comedic timing between these actors excels on-screen for this naturally formed group of old friends, new friends, and reunited sibling characters. (Photo by: Patrick Wymore/Hulu) Hulu “It was a very special environment that we created for ourselves and a large part of that is due to Hilary being number one on the call sheet and also a producer on the show - just showing up and really creating a nurturing environment where we all felt like equals,” Lowell says, who plays Sophie’s new friend Jesse on How I Met Your Father. Tran plays Jesse’s recently divorced sister Ellen and continues on about Duff saying, “I will say getting to work with Hilary is a true honor and I want to echo what Chris was saying - it’s like we’ve all worked so well together because it trickles down from the top and with Hilary at the top with her kindness and she leads with such generosity and it’s effortless and it makes all of us feel safe and warm and excited to come to work.” “She’s such a professional,” says Raisa who plays Sophie’s closest friend and roommate Valentina. “She is so sweet and she has definitely set the precedent. That girl knows every single line and she works with all of us. It was such a breath of fresh air that we were all on the same page and it is an ensemble cast and it is teamwork with people in front of the screen and off the screen to make this the show that it is.” Ainsley plays Valentina’s new British boyfriend Charlie and continues on about Duff’s positive example on this multi-camera series saying, “The first day though when we were all talking amongst ourselves about how nervous we were and how we’d never done this sort of format before and to hear Hilary pipe up and say that she was feeling the exact same thing helped to push us together, I think.” Sharma plays Sid, Jesse’s best friend and the bar owner of a regular hangout spot for this new friends group. Sharma continues on with this admiration for Duff by saying, “The most strange thing about Hilary is how genuine she is. You can’t walk into her presence expecting that and then you’re like What the hell? You are so nice! And it’s one thing to be nice, but then to be nice and good and strong and generous - all these things in the same person, in terms of work and as a person generally? Come on, it’s great. She’s great!” How I Met Your Father — “FOMO” - Episode 102 — Determined to try and live in the moment, Sophie and ... [+] the gang head to an exclusive new club for a wild night out. (Photo by: Patrick Wymore/Hulu) Hulu With 10 episodes this season, there is a lot to look forward to with this supportive group of hardworking individuals, which is evident on-screen but clearly off-screen, as well. Being someone who has grown up from iconic childhood stardom to now a well-respected Hollywood professional with a husband and three children at home, I asked Duff how her mentality toward business decisions and choosing projects like How I Met Your Father have evolved as she continues on in her celebrated career. “First, I feel extremely lucky to have this role offered to me but there has been plenty of times where I’ve been fighting for a role and sometimes I get and sometimes I don’t. I think having children has made making decisions much easier for me with business, you know? Having had a long career and falling on my face plenty of times and not making the right call and then sometimes making the right call and just gaining confidence. It’s just experience under your belt and that’s really what it takes and boils down to and knowing your worth and fighting for equality. I think picking projects and even it boiling down to like a financial thing or a business aspect, it’s like I very easily can make a decision because I’m thinking about what’s back home - what’s worth it to me, what’s not.” Follow me on  Twitter .
