Every outdoor lover has a favorite national or state park, but when it comes to natural public lands, national forests are among the country's most breathtaking and functional spaces. There are 155 national forests in the United States, all managed by the U.S. Forest Service under the Department of Agriculture. Unlike national parks, which are set aside specifically for the conservation of pristine natural areas and landmarks, national forests focus on resource preservation while ensuring a healthy ecosystem for both humans and wildlife. Since 1905, national forests have provided Americans with not only recreational services, but also lumber, grazing areas, and vast mineral resources. In addition, these natural havens capture carbon, protect wildlife, produce clean drinking water, and give scientists a controlled environment to conduct research. The concept is not without its challenges, however, as threats like the climate crisis , wildfires, invasive species , and environmental policy continue to weigh heavily on the potential of these incredibly important lands. Here are 15 awe-inspiring national forests in the United States that are sure to motivate you to step outside and appreciate nature. 1

Tucked within the alpine White Mountains between New Hampshire and Maine, White Mountain National Forest encompasses 148,000 acres of wilderness. This forest is known especially for its vast water resources, including 12,000 acres of wetlands, over 4,000 miles of streams, 67 lakes, and 35 watersheds. The forest houses almost the entirety of Mount Washington, the highest peak in the northeastern United States, and is home to almost 200 species of birds, including the extremely rare Bicknell’s thrush. 2
Superior National Forest (Minnesota)

Superior National Forest made headlines in 2020 when The Nature Conservancy purchased over 2,000 acres of private land inside its borders to save it from development.﻿﻿﻿ Superior National Forest is located on the U.S.-Canada border, in Minnesota’s Arrowhead Region, on the edge of Lake Superior. Established in 1909, it is famous for its boreal forest ecosystem (a subarctic climate in the Northern Hemisphere) and its clean lakes (more than 695 square miles of the forest are surface water). With over 3 million acres in total, there are some pretty important animals who call this forest home, including black bears and gray wolves. 3

Dixie National Forest occupies almost 2 million acres between the Great Basin and the Colorado River, making it the largest national forest in the state of Utah. High altitudes ranging from 2,800 feet to 11,322 feet give this forest a plethora of climates. Summer temperatures can reach 100 degrees Fahrenheit near St. George, while winters can see 40 inches of rain and -30 degrees Fahrenheit on the mountain plateaus. This part of southern Utah has a significant place in archeological history, as well, evidenced by pictographs, petroglyphs, and prehistoric dwellings inside the boundaries of the forest; these and other artifacts are studied and preserved by the Dixie National Forest Heritage Program. 4

Located in southern Washington, Gifford Pinchot is one of the country’s oldest national forests. Its range features 1.3 million acres of mountains, valleys, rivers, waterfalls, and, most famously, volcanoes. Mount St. Helens , responsible for the most recent deadly volcanic eruption in the continental United States, erupted back in 1980. Two years later, President Ronald Reagan designated the 110,000 acres surrounding the volcano into Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument, which is still frequented by hikers to this day. The national forest is named after Gifford Pinchot, who served as the first head of the United States Forest Service. 5

Bordered by the famed Yosemite National Park to the northwest and Kings Canyon National Park to the south, Sierra National Forest is known as one of California's most popular natural recreational destinations. With over one thousand miles of trails for hiking, horseback riding, or backpacking—both well-maintained and rugged—outdoor enthusiasts have plenty of choices when it comes to exciting ground to cover. Sierra National Forest faces challenges from the invasive western pine beetle, which contributed to the death of 8 million trees between 2011 and 2015. Although less serious, large numbers of pine trees were also killed by pine engraver beetles in 2015. 8

With over 500,000 acres of whitewater rivers and waterfalls, and hundreds of miles of trails, Pisgah National Forest is tucked in the Appalachian Mountains of western North Carolina. Home of the country’s first school of forestry, Pisgah was also the first land purchased under the Weeks Act of 1911, which authorized the federal government to acquire land as national forests in the eastern U.S.
Over the past 30 years, Pisgah has struggled with overtourism , as visitor numbers have increased faster than recreational sites can accommodate, causing degradation to forest infrastructure. As a result, the National Forest Foundation has integrated restoration efforts through its Investing in the Great Outdoors campaign. 9
Black Hills National Forest (South Dakota and Wyoming)

Black Hills National Forest has a patriotic claim to fame: it is home to Mount Rushmore, the massive granite sculpture carved with the likeness of U.S. presidents George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln, and Theodore Roosevelt. Completed in 1941, the 60-foot faces attract massive flocks of visitors each year, though it isn’t the only feature that makes this park special. The national forest also encompasses 1.2 million acres of grasslands and pine forests waiting to be explored, as well as spaces for camping, hiking, mountain biking, rock climbing, and wildlife viewing. 10

One of the country’s most unique national forests, Ocala is the southernmost forest in the United States. It’s located on 387,000 acres of land in north central Florida, between the Ocklawaha and the St. Johns rivers, and protects the world’s largest contiguous sand pine scrub forest. Ocala has over 600 rivers, lakes, and springs, including Juniper Springs, Salt Springs, Alexander Springs and Silver Glen Springs, which naturally remain at 72 degrees Fahrenheit year-round. Visitors enjoy snorkeling or canoeing in the clear spring waters, as well as camping, fishing, bird watching, hiking, bicycling, horseback riding, and four-wheeling. 11
Tonto National Forest (Arizona)

The largest of Arizona’s six national forests and the seventh largest in the country, Tonto National Forest stretches through 2.9 million acres near Phoenix. Landscapes range from beachy lakesides to stone canyons, and range in altitude from 1,300 to 7,900 feet, which helps attract 3 million visitors per year. A true reflection of the American national forest system, Tonto has six major reservoirs, houses 21 threatened and endangered species, grazes 26,000 head of cattle, harvests 4 million board feet of timber annually, and has a history of mineral mining going back 150 years. The fire season at Tonto is short but critical: the forest has averaged 330 wildfires each year for the last 10 years. 13

Originally known as Cumberland National Forest, this nature haven started out as a series of land purchases from coal and timber companies across 21 counties in Kentucky. Locals fiercely protested the name “Cumberland,” since it traced back to the Duke of Cumberland, who was instrumental in the downfall of the Jacobite Uprising in Scotland. This historic event resulted in many Scottish families fleeing to America, especially to states like Kentucky. President Lyndon B. Johnson took the protests to heart and changed the name to Daniel Boone National Forest in 1966, after the famous outdoorsman and Kentucky pioneer. 14

He’ll spend three full days on campus (March 14-16) helping graduates and undergraduates develop story ideas, while also discussing production, casting, and analyzing rough cuts of their films. “I still vividly remember the shock and wonder of seeing City of God for the first time,” said Dodge College Dean Stephen Galloway. “It changed my — and everyone else’s — views on the possibilities of film. Having Fernando here will be a life-changing experience for all of us.”
This continues a relationship between Chapman and Meirelles that began last year when the director took part in Dodge’s Master Class series. Recent Master Classes have featured such guests as Colin Farrell (The Banshees of Inisherin), Joel Coen (No Country for Old Men), Ke Huy Quan (Everything Everywhere All at Once), Todd Field (Tár), Brendan Fraser (The Whale), Damien Chazelle (La La Land) and Austin Butler (Elvis). Meirelles developed his love of film while studying at the University of Sao Paulo. After producing numerous television shows, he made 2002’s City of God, about life in Rio de Janeiro’s slums, which earned him a best director Oscar nomination. In 2005, he directed Ralph Fiennes and Rachel Weisz in The Constant Gardener, earning a Golden Globe nomination for best director (and an Oscar for Weisz). He also directed Netflix’s acclaimed The Two Popes in 2019. His other films include Blindness and 360.

As the world slowly transitions to cleaner energy, batteries are increasingly in the news. But batteries come with a perplexing twist: What to do with them once they've died? Do you find yourself with a drawer full of loose batteries that you don’t really know what to do with? Whether single-use, rechargeable, or from your vehicle, batteries are recyclable —but it's not as simple as tossing them into the curbside bin. States have different policies regarding battery disposal. California, for example, considers discarded batteries as hazardous waste , making them illegal to throw into the trash. The state has plenty of resources for ways to safely dispose of batteries, however, from local drop-off centers to mail-in services. In San Francisco, residents who live in single-family homes or small multifamily buildings can put loose household batteries inside a tightly sealed plastic bag, and place them on top of their closed landfill bin, while larger apartment buildings can order special collection buckets for used batteries free of charge . Other states have laws regarding the proper disposal of specific types of batteries, such as vehicle batteries. Check your state’s battery recycling laws here . Just because you live in a state where it’s legal to toss your old batteries into the garbage, doesn’t mean you should. First of all, most batteries contain cobalt, nickel, manganese, and other heavy metals that can be potentially toxic, and keeping them out of landfills ensures that these metals don’t leech out and pollute drinking water or the natural environment. That’s pretty concerning, considering only 10% of the 5 billion batteries that are purchased in the United States each year are recycled. And, since the metals found inside batteries are considered valuable, recycling them minimizes the need to mine for raw materials. For example, some 50% of the world’s raw cobalt production comes from the Democratic Republic of Congo and has been linked to issues like armed conflict, human rights abuses, and harmful environmental practices. Mines in the "lithium triangle," a region rich in lithium reserves around the borders of Argentina, Bolivia, and Chile, may bring economic benefits to the state, but not without great social and environmental cost; the mining industry here regularly extracts large amounts of groundwater in an arid ecosystem where the only source of water for its local communities comes by way of mountain runoff . How to Recycle Batteries
Different batteries are made using different mixtures of chemical elements and metals such as mercury, lead, cadmium, nickel, and silver, while others may contain cobalt, lithium, and graphite that are treated as critical minerals by the United States Geological Survey. And although all of these materials can pose a threat to human health or the environment when improperly managed, critical minerals are considered additionally “economically and strategically important” to the United States since they have a high supply risk potential; as a result, they are of high value to the country’s recycling centers. The recycling process for these batteries involves a process called high-temperature metal reclamation where the batteries are sorted, cut, melted, and the metals extracted. With alkaline or zinc-carbon batteries, the materials are shredded to separate the paper, plastics, and metal. The materials are then either used to make new batteries or new products. It is important to check with your local recycling center, waste center, or county website to learn where to send or drop off your batteries. Since the materials inside batteries are considered valuable, places like Home Depot and Lowe’s may take them as well. Check the Earth 911 recycling locator to find a location near you that will recycle old batteries. Non-Rechargeable / Single Use
Before 1996, single use batteries contained mercury and were therefore treated as hazardous waste, but the practice was phased out due to the Mercury-Containing and Rechargeable Battery Management Act. Today, the average, general purpose alkaline batteries (such as the AAA, AA, C, and D batteries that go in your remote control or child’s toy) are made of steel and a combination of zinc, manganese, potassium, graphite, paper, and plastic—all of which, in theory, are recyclable. Single use lithium batteries arrived on the scene about 40 years ago, becoming increasingly popular due to their lighter weight and higher, longer energy output. Same goes for those shiny disc-shaped zinc batteries that go in your watch or hearing aid. Rechargeable
Unlike single use batteries, rechargeable batteries (which can be found in cellphone, laptops, appliances, digital cameras, and power tools) are rarely allowed in your household trash bin. Instead, recycle them through mail-in, drop-off, or take-back programs. These batteries are more likely to contain those valuable heavy metals that can be especially hazardous to the environment. Vehicle Batteries
Like household batteries, vehicle batteries can be recycled through your car’s manufacturer or through similar drop off programs once they’ve reached the end of their lives. Though, since technology is changing all the time, vehicle batteries are becoming more and more efficient. In March 2021, a project funded by the Toyota Research Institute combined machine learning with knowledge gained from experimental physics to help understand the shortened lifetimes of fast-charging lithium-ion batteries. The goal is to develop a long-lived electric vehicle battery that can be charged in as little as 10 minutes . In May of the same year, Harvard researchers designed a stable, lithium-metal battery that could be charged and discharged at least 10,000 times , a technology that could increase the lifetime of electric vehicles without the need to replace the battery. According to a 2014 study in Sustainable Energy Technologies and Assessments, re-using electric vehicle (EV) batteries when they’ve reached the end of their lives could reduce CO2 emissions by 56% compared to using natural gas fuel for electrical power generation (similar to that of switching from a conventional vehicle to an EV). Where to Recycle Batteries
For smaller operations and households, residents should call their local waste district to find out if their community has a collection program or do a quick search using Earth911’s Recycling resource. You can also find a mail-in recycling program that accepts batteries. Most of these programs will sell you a container to store used batteries that can be mailed when filled. If you run an office or a business that goes through a lot of batteries, it may be economical to purchase a Big Green Box for convenient recycling of batteries and other electronic devices. Battery Solutions is a similar company that provides battery recycling services for all of North America, and Call2Recycle is a non-profit that offers multiple resources and options. Or, check with local home improvement stores like Home Depot directly to find a drop off location for an even more convenient option. Once you’ve chosen how you’ll be recycling your batteries, take some time to prep them by placing a piece of non-conductive clear tape over the ends and storing them in a plastic bag or cardboard container that doesn’t conduct electricity in case of a spark. Keep in mind that if you’re mailing your batteries, the recycling facility might require additional safety steps.
