WERNERSVILLE, Pa.--( BUSINESS WIRE )-- Caron Treatment Centers , a leading, internationally recognized nonprofit dedicated to addiction and behavioral healthcare treatment, research, prevention, and addiction medicine education, will officially open The Fran and Doug Tieman Center For Research on its Pennsylvania campus on June 7th. The Fran and Doug Tieman Center for Research , named for Caron’s former President and CEO, is the first-of-its-kind to be located at a nonprofit addiction treatment facility with a focus on medical research. Caron has a demonstrated track record of success in medical research. However, the revamped building, featuring state-of-the-art equipment and labs, will now offer much-needed space to facilitate more studies. It will also allow for recruitment of individuals interested in participating in research from outside Caron. The focus of the Center for Research includes crucial components of substance use disorder prevention, treatment and recovery such as identifying genetic markers associated with increased risk for addiction, relapse prediction and repurposing medications approved by the FDA to treat other diseases. “All it takes is a glance at the headlines to see the abysmal state of mental health and substance use disorder in America,” said Bradley F. Sorte , Caron’s President and CEO. “We can’t afford to wait. We need research now more than ever to significantly expand solutions to these chronic health issues so we can prevent unnecessary tragedies and significantly improve outcomes for individuals and families.”
The Center for Research will also focus on expanding academic partnerships to foster research and train healthcare professionals to apply the most up- to- date, evidence-based treatments in their practices. The Center for Research is also establishing a pipeline program to engage high school and college students interested in pursuing careers in research and healthcare. Dr. Joseph Garbely , DO, DFASAM, FAPA, is the Chief Medical Officer and the Executive Vice President for Medical Strategy, Education and Research at Caron Treatment Centers. Dr. Olapeju Simoyan , MD, MPH, BDS, FAAFP, FASAM, is the Founding Executive Director of Research. Dr. Garbely will oversee the Center with Dr. Simoyan managing the day-to-day operations with support from Dr. Erin Deneke, Ph.D., Caron’s Senior Director of Research. “Addiction is a disease of the brain so it’s important for us to understand the biological mechanisms involved,” said Dr. Simoyan. “Just as with cancer, diabetes and cardiovascular disease, research is essential to advance our field.”
To date, Caron raised $7.9 million to fund ongoing research and the new building, through the generosity of individual donors, family foundations and local businesses. Leading Treatment Provider Encourages Communities, Families to Educate Themselves about the Dangers of Adulterated Drugs

WERNERSVILLE, Pa.--( BUSINESS WIRE )-- Caron Treatment Centers , an internationally recognized nonprofit organization dedicated to addiction and behavioral healthcare treatment, research, prevention, and addiction medicine education is warning communities and families about fentanyl, the powerful synthetic opioid, now adulterating everything from cocaine to marijuana, and advising families and communities to educate themselves, amid an increasingly alarming overdose rate. The CDC’s National Center for Health Statistics reported an estimated 100,306 drug overdose deaths in the United States during 12-month period ending in April 2021, an increase of 28.5% from the 78,056 deaths during the same period the year before, largely attributed to fentanyl. According to the National Institute for Drug Abuse (NIDA) , fentanyl is similar to morphine but is 50 to 100 times more potent. When people overdose on fentanyl, their breathing can slow or stop. This can decrease the amount of oxygen that reaches the brain, a condition called hypoxia. Hypoxia can lead to a coma and permanent brain damage, and even death. “What many people don’t realize is that fentanyl is no longer solely associated with heroin. It’s turning up in drugs like cocaine, cannabis, Ecstasy and even black market stimulants and benzodiazaepines such as Xanax, Ativan, Valium, as well as oxycontin,” said Dr. Joseph Garbely, D.O. , Chief Medical Officer and Executive Vice President of Medical Research and Education at Caron. “That means there is no casual use of these substances – your first time could literally be your last.”
Dr. Christopher Grant , Psy.D., a staff psychologist and Clinical Supervisor of Caron’s Teen and Young Adult Male Services, reports that more young patients coming into treatment, who do not have an opioid use disorder, are being admitted to Caron with fentanyl in their system. “As more teens and young adults emerge from the pandemic with mental health issues, it’s critical that families discuss the increasing prevalence of fentanyl with adolescents and young adults as part of an ongoing dialogue about healthy coping skills and the dangers of substance use,” said Dr. Grant. “Tragically, many people are unaware that they’re playing Russian Roulette,” added Dr. Adam Scioli , D.O., Caron’s Medical Director and Head of Psychiatry. “There’s an urgent need to raise awareness among individuals and families about these issues and the importance of accessing treatment.”
Naloxone is approved to treat a fentanyl overdose when given right away. It works by rapidly binding to opioid receptors and blocking the effects of opioid drugs. The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) provides detailed information about how naloxone can be used to save someone who is overdosing and where it is available. Caron’s medical team urges families and communities to take immediate action to educate themselves about naloxone. They strongly encourage people to consider keeping naloxone in their homes and places where people congregate. “If you’ve suspected someone has overdosed and you don’t know what they’ve taken - the most important step is to call 911 so they can receive immediate medical attention,” said Garbely. “Medical personnel will administer naloxone if they suspect an opioid drug is involved.”

Fentanyl – Not Just an Opioid Problem – Warns Caron Treatment Centers

CentralSquare Technologies , in partnership with Caron Treatment Centers, is hosting a webinar series with the National Law Enforcement Memorial and Museum to raise awareness of post-traumatic stress and destigmatize trauma in the law enforcement community. The presentation, titled  Trauma and 9/11: Facing Challenges, Together , will feature one-on-one interviews, stories from figures in the law enforcement community, examples of communal support for first responders affected by loss, and a live panel leading a 9/11-focused discussion on trauma. “We are proud to partner with Caron and the National Law Enforcement Memorial and Museum to destigmatize the conversation around mental health in the law enforcement and first responder community,” said four-time  Wash100 Award winner  David Zolet , CEO of CentralSquare. Like in so many other industries, it’s not a stretch to state that AI is revolutionizing the substance abuse  treatment sector, providing new opportunities for recognizing crisis, finding like-minded peers, early detection through genetic testing, and ultimately full recovery. While completely automated, AI-driven substance abuse treatment may still be a ways off, AI and machine learning technologies built to help patients and their families return to health are becoming more accessible and impactful everyday. Caron has been at the forefront of fighting this public epidemic for the past 60 years and has just entered a new phase with the appointment of Brad Sorte as the CEO-elect. In this interview, Brad shares his insights on how artificial intelligence will impact [and is already impacting] substance abuse treatment, as well as lessons learned as someone who has seen and helped countless individuals come to terms with and recover from their addiction. You just hit what many would consider to be a desirable milestone in your career. How does it feel to be CEO of Caron? You know I remember distinctly in 2015 when I was the new Executive Director of Caron Florida. I was making my first trip to Caron Pennsylvania since my parents dropped me off there as a patient nearly 10 years before. I have seen many people- friends included, come and go at Caron. As I approached Caron’s PA campus and its iconic fences, it struck me how vastly different the circumstances of those trips were – and how real the gift and promise of life in recovery are. It’s a trip I would get to make nearly every day as Caron’s incoming CEO. That fills me with gratitude and a sense of great responsibility. Why do you think Caron has made such a positive impact so consistently over all these years? What role has data, technology, and AI played in that success? Caron’s patient-centric approach to treatment, prevention and research is why we are able to have a positive impact on individuals, families and the treatment community at large. By continually reviewing our performance at every level and evaluating our outcomes, client feedback and the latest science and research, we can swiftly adapt and apply innovations and improvements to our patient care. We also look at the opportunities where we believe that our clients and stakeholders are not being served and that’s where we are focus our time and energy. Caron’s program innovations – whether it was offering one of the first gender separate program models more than 20 years ago to more recently developing programs for specific groups such as young adults, older adults and individuals who were medically compromised, or, most recently, engaging in our value based insurance contract model -  continue to set the standards for our sector. Technology plays a critical role in the science of addiction medicine. Specifically at Caron Treatment Centers, we now use a person’s DNA to determine the best medication for their underlying psychological diagnosis, allowing us to start that medication sooner, which increases the likelihood of a sustained recovery. We can also use artificial intelligence to predict and intercede when an individual may be in the early stages of a relapse or recurrence. Through AI, we are able to create predictive indices that can identify when a person is at risk for relapse due to changes in their geolocation, contacts they are engaging with on their phone, and consistency in follow through with aftercare recommendations. All of this information combines to get a rich data set that allows us to be targeted in our response to minimize the relapse, while also allowing us to redirect people to treatment immediately following a full relapse. This early warning system is especially important in opioid use disorder because risk of death increases significantly for those who relapse after treatment. What is your perspective on the use of AI in substance abuse treatment? How would you like it to be used in the future? We’re just scratching the surface of AI in substance use disorder treatment. I see multiple areas where artificial intelligence can expand its influence and improve long-term outcomes. AI is essential in creating predictive engines and analyzing  multitude of data points, this can be used to identify people at high risk for relapse. Beyond that, the idea of creating human and artificial intelligence “centaurs,“ combining the best of human intuition and AI analysis, will allow us to have a greater degree of accuracy to identify the best treatment protocols by analyzing the clinical issues present in a patient. We have seen this in oncology and those outcomes are a great example of the whole being more powerful than the sum of its parts. How can other companies in your industry and beyond take a page out of your book when it comes to an innovative approach? What advice would you give up and coming executives who are looking to build a company with a legacy like Caron? It’s easy to get distracted by the latest treatment fad. Chasing after the latest shiny objects causes organizations to exhaust their resources, as does trying to be all things to all people, as opposed to really honing in on what it is their great at. Focus on the needs of your clients, what are they looking for and how are those needs not being met. I would advise up and comers to have an unrelenting commitment to quality and customer service. People are coming to us on the worst day of their lives, bewildered by the choices they have to make. It’s on us to make that as painless as possible, while giving them the best possible care. I think every business has a vision, a reason for existence. However, it seems that businesses and organizations often become obsessed with being a business, making money rather than fulfilling a need or actualizing their vision. Perhaps Caron being a not-for-profit company may have affected how dedicated we are to our vision, but what I have found with our patient-centric approach is that when you invest in a system that prioritizes a patient’s recovery from this chronic, treatable brain disease, when you hire full-time addiction medicine physicians, doctors and masters-level psychologists, counselors certified in substance use disorder and process disorders ( sex, gambling, shopping, digital use, gaming) – and provide medically-appropriate evidence-based treatment…patients get well, insurers want to work with you and people get behind your cause. This has been true for us at Caron and there is no reason it cannot be true for anyone. When you understand your customers’ needs, align your vision and resources, and do what’s right, you succeed. It is all about focusing on the vision and the big picture and not obsessing over the balance sheet to the detriment of results. I would also advise up-and-coming executives to keep a sense of humility, learn to listen, keep an open mind, and maintain their curiosity. Knowing why we do what we do is just as important as doing it. What are your thoughts on the future of technology, artificial intelligence, and the future of substance abuse treatment? There continues to be a lot of opportunity for technology to improve the healthcare delivery system, especially in substance use disorder treatment. One of the best places that we are seeing this will be the continued growth of measurable outcomes that can help to inform practitioners as to how to improve their care, research efforts to advance the science of addiction medicine, and increased access. The future of substance use disorder treatment will continue to see integration into the overall behavioral health continuum as the silos between psychiatric and substance use disorder treatment continue to collapse. Eventually, these sectors also will become a more integrated part of the healthcare delivery system as a whole. The pandemic exposed the need for more alignment of mental, behavioral and physical health care, which we at Caron are helping to facilitate through our medical education initiatives. This will be a net positive for patients as these issues will be treated through a whole person lens and the interdependencies of their issues are addressed in concert. Lastly, what inspired you and what keeps you going after ten plus years in the field? The promise of recovery and the actualization of it! Can you think of a more inspiring phenomenon? People come to Caron during some of the worst and darkest days of their lives. To see them begin to make connections, reconnect with family and loved ones, inspires me to keep going. I’m also driven by the fact that substance use disorder left untreated can be deadly. The work we do saves lives. Caron’s reach goes beyond treatment and extends to prevention, education, and medical research. We try to teach and enlighten people about the potency of treatment and its ability to improve the lives of the 1 in 3 American families affected by this disease. We want to help reset the way we talk and think about substance use disorder and treatment, we want to share the promise of recovery. I have seen it firsthand many times and as CEO, I want to continue providing not just hope to individuals and families, but results. 75% of those with a substance use disorder will recover and achieve remission. At one year, recovery is more likely than relapse and at 5 years, a person in recovery is as likely to begin abusing substances as a person who never had a substance use disorder.
