About the presentation
It’s impossible to sell production parts into the aerospace, medical, or automotive markets without the ability to quality assure those parts are manufactured to standards set by customers, such as the Production Part Approval Process (PPAP) or regulatory authorities including the FDA, FAA, or Nadcap. In terms of part quality, the method of production might’ve changed, but the rules still apply. Data carrying the engineer’s original intent travels from design, prototyping, materials, simulation to quality inspection (internal and external). This digital thread enables quality inspection, the key to industrializing additive manufacturing (AM). The nightmare scenario for an AM parts maker is to have a box of parts returned by a customer for being out of “spec” and not having the tools to understand why. This session covers the three main reasons why adhering to the rules is more challenging using AM methods, but certainly achievable. Conforming to quality assurance regulations using AM methods is more difficult when compared to subtractive processes. This shouldn’t be a surprise, as the rules developed around subtractive manufacturing. The obvious problem is there’s no equivalent to inspection between discrete machining operations for AM. The rules still apply when it comes to producing and validating precision, mission-critical parts for original equipment manufacturers (OEMs). Quality assurance has been a roadblock for the AM industry in its evolution to become a serious contender in the precision parts arena. There are now a considerable number of advanced measurement and inspection technologies applied to AM from laser scanners to coordinate measuring machines (CMMs), structured light systems to computed tomography (CT) scanners. Some combination of these systems, along with automation capabilities, can readily address the part verification needs of AM users and finally lead to the industrialization of AM. Registration

Giles Gaskell has worked in the field of non-contact scanning for reverse engineering and inspection since 1997. He worked with many of Europe’s most prestigious design, engineering, and manufacturing companies before moving to the United States in 2004. Gaskell is a recognized subject matter expert and communicator in the field of 3D metrology and 3D scanning. He served as an adviser to the society of manufacturing engineers for the RAPID+TCT Conference and presented 3D scanning educational workshops each year at this conference from 2008 – 2022. Gaskell also serves as an advisor and 3D scanning track leader for the annual Additive Manufacturing Users Group (AMUG) conference. For six years from 2016 - 2022, presented 3D scanning workshops to a wide range of expert, intermediate, and novice users attending AMUG to advance their knowledge of commercial AM technologies. In 2021, Gaskell was awarded a DINO (Distinguished Innovator Operator) by the AMUG, recognizing an individual’s contribution to the AM industry. Seeking to obtain better results and minimize time needed between testing and production, Guill built its own rheology lab in the West Warwick, Rhode Island facility. The lab features testing equipment including a hybrid rotational rheometer, a differential scanning calorimeter, and a thermal conductivity meter. Third-party testing facilities aren’t typically experienced in extrusion processes. Guill, however, gathers data the same way third-party testers do but interprets it as it applies specifically to extrusion. Likewise, third-parties supply data, not recommendations. Guill is now equipped to test customer’s materials and work with them to create extrusion tooling that gives a competitive edge. Accurate simulation and interpretation by extrusion experts reduces the physical reworks needed because the tooling has a greater chance of producing a good product at the outset. In-house testing speeds the turnaround on test results, reducing delays during the tool design process and offering better control over the processes and test parameters. The rheology lab processes standard materials and custom formulae and is equipped to mix materials including plastics, thermoplastic elastomers, all types of rubber, and silicone. Information from the lab is transmitted directly to the engineering department via computer link for review by the design team. Greg McHale founded Datanomix on the premise that the 4th industrial revolution would require turnkey products that integrate seamlessly with how manufacturers work today. McHale held engineering leadership positions at several venture-backed companies and is a graduate of Worcester Polytechnic Institute. Local, state, and federal officials celebrated the groundbreaking of the National Advanced Air Mobility Center of Excellence (NAAMCE) at the Springfield-Beckley Municipal Airport near Dayton, Ohio. The NAAMCE will feature a two-story, 30,000ft2 office building to house administrative, laboratory, meeting, and collaboration space, with 25,000ft2 of aircraft hangar space available for use by the U.S. Air Force and private industry. The center will support the expanding work of manufacturers and operators of electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft and unmanned aerial systems (UAS) for advanced air mobility (AAM). Vermont-based Beta Technologies, California-based Joby Aviation, and Texas firm LIFT Aircraft already use the airport to support eVTOL development. The Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) partnered with the State of Ohio to develop SkyVision, a system to establish and operate a ground-based detect and avoid (GBDAA) system at the site. In 2019, the Federal Aviation Administration granted AFRL authority for beyond-visual-line-of-sight flight of UAS at the airport. The City of Springfield, Dayton Development Coalition (DDC), JobsOhio, and the State of Ohio have worked closely with the AFRL and its AFWERX Agility Prime program to accelerate commercial eVTOL technology development that supports the Air Force’s need for resilient distributed logistics and sustainable mobility. The new facility is within 30 minutes’ drive of Wright-Patterson Air Force Base and the AFRL. Opening of the NAAMCE is planned for September 2023. The Department of Defense approved a $6 million Defense Community Infrastructure Program grant to support the project in 2021. With additional state and local government funding, total investment in the site will surpass $10 million . The State of Ohio and Dayton regional governments seek to leverage the center of excellence and existing aerospace assets to attract AAM manufacturing to the area. State officials estimate the AAM economic impact in Ohio to reach $13 billion through 2045, generating 15,000 related jobs if the state continues to invest in AAM activities. The groundbreaking took place on the second day of the National Advanced Air Mobility Industry Forum , a showcase for Ohio’s collaborative aviation ecosystem and supply chain. Exhibitors included representatives of the region’s resources for research and development, aerospace manufacturing, colleges and universities, and workforce development. Panel discussions featured industry representatives from Joby Aviation, LIFT Aircraft, Lilium, Beta Technologies, and Workhorse Group, plus government officials from the FAA, NASA, and U.S. Air Force. Discussion topics included eVTOL progress to-date, AAM aircraft certification and integration into the national air space, healthcare use cases, and federal agency partnerships. Capable to host customer payloads of up to 145kg and a total satellite mass of up to 220kg, the company has now one of the widest ranges of commercially available modular microsatellite buses in the industry. Designed to significantly reduce mechanical constraints for payload integration, the satellites across the new bus range are variously ideal for more sophisticated missions in the fields of remote sensing, high data throughput and complex communications missions, emergency communications, fundamental research, and as orbital transfer vehicles (OTV). All MP42 microsats are equipped with NanoAvionics ’s next generation payload controller. The controller allows customers to build their own software blocks. The microsats provide intersatellite link for both LEO-LEO and LEO-GEO, ensuring uninterrupted real time communications. For communications missions, all MP42 buses provide customers with options to tailor the satellites for their bandwidth and constellation coverage needs. The successful heritage mission for this microsat range, a prototype of the MP42, flew into orbit aboard a Falcon F9 in April this year. “More and more customers require sophisticated missions and applications which in return demand flexible buses designed and equipped to host their larger payloads while keeping cost low,” says Vytenis J. Buzas, founder and CEO of NanoAvionics . “With our newly extended range, based on our flight proven MP42 bus, and together with our mission operations and launch brokering, we are offering the perfect solution to allow these companies to get their operational satellites into orbit quickly, safely, and cost-effectively. The extension is also the logical next step of our strategic decision to expand into the microsatellite market that was based on reduced costs in the launcher segment, allowing heavier payloads because of that. A development that we are seeing across the whole industry.”

The use for advanced missions and applications is a result of their modular design and being optimized to offer flexible envelopes to host customer payloads of up to 145kg and a total satellite mass of up to 220kg. Their design significantly reduces mechanical constraints for payload integration. This gives customers freedom for the shape and volume of payloads, without interfering with the satellite frame, lowering costs for development and payload integration and improves lead times and reliability. Overall cost and lead times are lowered by the standardized design that keeps 80% of the satellite’s architecture for any customer mission. It enables NanoAvionics to manufacture parts in larger quantities in advance. Microsatellite buses are part of an end-to-end mission infrastructure for single missions and for constellations, including launch and logistics, ground station network, and mission operations. Equipped with optional EPSS enabling propulsion system for small satellites, the satellites perform high-impulse maneuvers including orbit maintenance, precision flight in formations, orbit synchronization, atmospheric drag compensation, and in certain cases even orbital deployment. This results in extended satellite orbital lifetime significantly reducing cost for replacing constellation satellites. The microsatellite bus range (all sizes and dimensions depend on customer required configurations)
• The smallest bus in the range is the MP42H with an empty bus mass starting at 18kg and a payload envelope beginning at 280 x 325 x 280mm, accommodating payloads of up to 22kg. • The MP42, sitting in the middle, has an empty bus mass starting at 45kg with a payload envelope beginning at 490 x 480 x 350mm, and capable to accommodate payloads of up to 75kg. •At the top of the range is the MP42D with a total empty bus mass starting at 70kg and a payload envelope starting at 740 x 730 x 500mm, accommodating payloads of up to 145kg. The final satellite height of all three buses can be adjusted up to 1300mm to accommodate larger payload requirements, required for new commercial exploration and more cost-effective research missions in LEO. The MP42D‘s increased payload envelope and its greater antenna width also makes it ideal for remote sensing applications. The antenna improves ground-range and azimuthal resolution (the angle or distance by which two targets must be separated to be distinguished by a radar set, when the targets are at the same range), peak transmission power, pulse duration, and noise bandwidth. The increased envelope enables optical imaging payloads with a ground sampling distance of 0.5m or less. About the presentation

Guill Tool launches in-house rheology lab
With the ability to test materials before they are extruded, Guill customers receive testing coupled with industry experience and shorter lead times. August 26, 2022
Guill Tool opened an in-house rheology laboratory, making it the only extrusion tooling manufacturer in the industry with such a capability. Seeking to obtain better results and minimize time needed between testing and production, Guill built its own rheology lab in the West Warwick, Rhode Island facility. The lab features testing equipment including a hybrid rotational rheometer, a differential scanning calorimeter, and a thermal conductivity meter. Third-party testing facilities aren’t typically experienced in extrusion processes. Guill, however, gathers data the same way third-party testers do but interprets it as it applies specifically to extrusion. Likewise, third-parties supply data, not recommendations. Guill is now equipped to test customer’s materials and work with them to create extrusion tooling that gives a competitive edge. Accurate simulation and interpretation by extrusion experts reduces the physical reworks needed because the tooling has a greater chance of producing a good product at the outset. In-house testing speeds the turnaround on test results, reducing delays during the tool design process and offering better control over the processes and test parameters. The rheology lab processes standard materials and custom formulae and is equipped to mix materials including plastics, thermoplastic elastomers, all types of rubber, and silicone. Information from the lab is transmitted directly to the engineering department via computer link for review by the design team. Greg McHale founded Datanomix on the premise that the 4th industrial revolution would require turnkey products that integrate seamlessly with how manufacturers work today. McHale held engineering leadership positions at several venture-backed companies and is a graduate of Worcester Polytechnic Institute. In 1986, after working in the CNC machining industry for many years, President Rob Caron, (P.E. ), identified a gap in the market when it came to CNC tool monitoring and machine control. He decided to start his own company in the basement of his Wells, Maine-based home to pursue the development of these conceptual technologies.
