Alex Algard on entrepreneurship, staying scrappy and no more all-nighters

Oct 8, 2014

Email  |  Twitter When Alex Algard led CarDomain Network to become one of the PSBJ’s fastest growing private companies in 2004, he did so while pulling frequent all-nighters. That’s changed now for the father of three, who says he’s had to become smarter about scheduling his time. But Algard is still moving forward at warp speed, now leading another company he founded, Whitepages . The time has come for the PSBJ’s annual 100 Fastest Growing Private Companies event . This year, we're taking a took a look back at how some of the founders from the 2004 list are doing. Algard stepped down from the CEO role at CarDomain in 2006 to focus more of his time on Whitepages. There are advantages to the big, simple business model Whitepages employs, he said. CarDomain was targeting the small market of car enthusiasts with a website including e-commerce and a community aspect. Whitepages, on the other hand, was bigger and has a simple focus. It provides contact information and uses that info to make apps for consumers and businesses. Whitepages has been growing its revenue rapidly — the company jumped from $42 million in 2011 to $63 million in 2013. It’s all about running lean, mean, effective businesses, Algard said. Whitepages has 150 employees that support the site, which gets 50 million unique users each month. “We have an awesome team, and a lot of good efficiencies comes with small teams,” he said. “You have to be scrappy and innovative.” It’s also a matter of taking the time to build a viable business model, he said. Go too fast, and you’ll veer off course. CarDomain grew slower than many other companies when it launched in 1998, but many of those other companies disappeared when the bubble burst. CarDomain survived and was acquired by Source Interlink Media in 2012, which is now known as TEN: The Enthusiast Network. It still operates a site for car lovers. Page 1
