He isn’t the only person in Vancouver, or around the globe, who has been inspired by their own experience of moving to a new city to try to use social media to forge real-life connections. Vancouver’s Katrina Martin kicked off the We Should Be Friends Instagram account, which first brought together a group of strangers at Kitsilano Beach in October. Since then, she’s promoted other meetups including beach hangouts, yoga, picnics, book clubs and paint nights. “Four years ago, I moved to Vancouver. It was hard and lonely but now I can see every lonely night, every awkwardly budding friendship, every feeling of being lost, worth it,” Martin captioned a TikTok video of hers. The TikTok creator’s next meetup is a Christmas gathering at a North Vancouver brewery. Tickets for it, which have sold out, cover the cost of renting the private space for the Dec. 17 date. “When I first arrived here it was easy to meet friends because I was staying in hostels where lots of other travellers were, but they usually didn’t stay long. Once I got an apartment it was harder,” Breuninger said. “If you’re feeling lonely on Christmas, don’t be sad because there are people like you out there. You just have the make an effort to meet them.”
