Dallas-Based Pieces Acquires Local Data Company to Continue Creating Healthier Communities Dallas-based Bowtie Business Intelligence will join local healthcare AI company Pieces to empower organizations of any size to transform data into actionable insights that can maximize impact on the community. Pieces Founder & CEO Ruben Amarasingham; President Fayiaz Chaudhri; CFO Brett Grob; and Bowtie BI founder and CEO, Peter Swanson Dallas-based Pieces, a healthcare AI company that addresses clinical and social determinants of health, has acquired fellow Dallas-based company Bowtie Business Intelligence, a data management and intelligent company that connects organizations to nearly any data source. Pieces aims to help organizations streamline clinician workflows and improve patient outcomes. Its technology, Pieces Predict and Pieces Connect, creates a comprehensive solution for connected community health. Through the intelligent software and services, like cloud-based AI, clinically-based natural language processing and and physician-supervised machine learning, Pieces is able to real-time interpret patient information and link health systems to community-based organizations. Overall, the goal is healthier outcomes—in and out of the hospital. With the deal, Pieces will be able to enhance its analytics and reporting capabilities to turn data into actionable insights, allowing the company to maximize its impact on the community. Bowtie Business Intelligence (Bowtie BI) enables data interoperability for organizations of any size, allowing them to have advanced reporting and analytics. “The Bowtie platform will enhance the interoperability and reporting capabilities of our current solutions to create an even richer data ecosystem for our clients,” Pieces President Fayiaz Chaudhri said in a statement. “By leveraging Bowtie’s data platform and flexible APIs, Pieces can quickly connect to nearly any software system used by community and healthcare customers and provide deeper, more actionable insights as they strive to make a difference in the lives of those that they serve each day.” Bowie BI’s platform—dubbed ‘extract, transform and load’ (ETL)—is lauded by the company as a powerful data management tool. Organizations are able to take complex data sets and turn them into a scalable, secure single spreadsheet, regardless of the systems already in place. This allows businesses to be managed at an affordable price point, Bowie BI says, which is beneficial to community orgs and nonprofits. And, it makes the data actually useful for analytics, reporting, and other use cases. “We know that holistic approaches to care delivery are needed so that the silos between clinical and non-clinical care settings can be broken down,” Pieces CFO Brett Grob said. “Having capabilities across a broader array of customers in both clinical and social service settings enhances our AI platform and our dynamic networks, and delivers value to both clinical and social service providers, and ultimately the patient.” Bowie BI Founder and CEO Peter Swanson, who formerly led 501ops, the company that developed Bowtie BI’s technology, says his team looks forward to joining Pieces. He will stay on as Pieces’ VP of Strategic Development. “Pieces shares our same values and commitment to improving our communities, which has remained part of our mission since our inception,” Swanson said in a statement. “We are also excited to increase Pieces interoperability with any governmental, nonprofit, community, and small business organization software to provide more visibility into the massive amounts of data gathered by these organizations.” The news follows Pieces’ announcement a year ago that it closed on a $25.7 million Series B funding round led by healthcare investment firm Concord Health Partners. That funding accelerated Pieces’ national distribution of its clinical analytics engine and social determinants of health platform. Since 2016, Pieces has been building integrated communities between health systems and community service providers. Its clients range from hospitals, health systems, and health plans to community health clinics and community service providers such as food banks, job assistance, and educational services. That includes: UVA Health System, Northwell Health, Children’s Health of Dallas, OSF Healthcare System, Baylor Scott and White Health, and Parkview Medical Center. Pieces currently has 55 employees, including the Bowtie team. Recently, the company moved and expanded its headquarters to The Offices at Williams Square in the Las Colinas business park of Irving, occupying a full floor at 5201 N. O’Connor Boulevard.
