Online retailer BoozeBud buys Get Wines Direct, tips consolidation

Dec 23, 2021

Share BoozeBud co-founders Adam Gale (l) and Mark Woollcott (r). Supplied. The acquisition gives seven-year-old BoozeBud about 200,000 active customers and $80 million in combined annual revenue. It makes it the largest online pure-play alcohol retailer, according to BoozeBud. The deal value was not disclosed, but was split across equity and cash. “There are quite attractive synergies in leveraging their range into our customer base and things like call centres etc. One of the things is their management team has equity in the business,” BoozeBud chief executive Alex Gale said. Get Wines Direct has been around since 2001, and will continue to run as a separate brand under BoozeBud’s ownership. It is profitable and has over 40 million bottles of wine since 2001. Advertisement BoozeBud is currently appointing IPO advisers. The company is chaired by Terry Davis, who was the chief executive of Coca-Cola Amatil for over a decade. Peter Lewis, a former chief financial officer of Channel Seven, sits on the board as a non-executive director. Australians spend about $25.4 billion on alcohol a year, and BoozeBud reckons its positioned to capture the shift of shoppers from old-school bottle shops to online. Online alcohol sales in Australia are still only 9 per cent of the total (up from 5.5 per cent in 2016). Online alcohol retail is also a crowded space, with many sub-scale operators, which BoozeBud reckons will have to consolidate. Boozebud was founded in 2014 by Alex Gale and Mark Woollcott, focusing on craft beer. It sold to Carlton United Breweries’ then owner, AB InBev, in 2016, with a five-year earn out model. The ownership moved to Asahi, before ending up with Catcha Group and the management in December 2020. Current ownership includes the founders, Catcha Group and some individual investors. BoozeBud used Herbert Freehills Smith as its legal adviser and PwC as its fund accountant and financial adviser. The Get Wines camp was advised by KPMG. The transaction was expected to complete late January. Get a first look at tomorrow's headlines Sign up to the Street Talk First Look newsletter
